Bicycle hire rip off - its more than car hire

I will be here in a few weeks and would like to hire a cycle but the prices are so high - €15 / day is the same price I am paying for car hire. I've even tried bargining by e-mail with a few of the hire places but with no avail. Does anyone know of hire places below €50 for 7 days?

Also why do the hire co's use mountain bikea they are just energy sapping. Urban style bikes are better with semi-slick tyres.

I know its ridiculous how you can hire a car cheper than a bike  You could buy a cheap mountaint bike for that ammount !! The reason car hire is so cheap is that alot of the (big) hire companies are actualy making a loss on them, the competition is so fearce that prices have been driven down massivley, so its either have a pound hald full or completely empty and kepe the bank semi happy.

Whereas theres a bigger mark up in bikes.

Oh and Mountain bikes are cheper to buy for the rental companies, and much sturdier expecailly for the tracks, hence only having them.

Exactly what I mean €15 a day for a basic bike and even worse for 1/2 suspension and they don't include lights; pump or repair kit. My 1/2 suspenion Specialized only cost £230 new.

I'm thinking of buying a cycle from http://www.iberanuncio.es putting a cover over it and hiding it somewhere so I can use it next time I'm in Ibiza.

This thread has started me thinking if whether or not i could or should take along my home built engine powered MB (actual photo of bike in my profile) carried as extra baggage to Ibiza. I'll be flying out with vueling and have looked at their Web Site for extra baggage costs and it say's that Sports Equipment is allowed at extra cost of 45 euros which seem's reasonable. However as i have a engine on the back of the bike i wonder if the Airline Compagnie would still accept the bike as baggage if carried in a legal bike holdall & if i left small the petrol tank at home hence no way for endangering lives from fumes escaping etc. Once arrived on the Island a temporary petrol tank can be easily & quickly setup using a empty 2litre plastic bottle. I've done the car hire thing along with bike rental in the past whilst their but i think the biggest thrill would be riding around the Island on a Motorized Bicycle8)
Ofcourse no-doubt i'll receive some very strange looks from other people as already my Wife & family think that the very idea that i'm thinking seriously about taking the MB to Ibiza means i've either gone completely mad or i'm losing my marbles8O

Eitherway, if i do manage on getting the MB over to Ibiza and the petrol bottle sorted when their then i'll have a very cheap mode of travel for seeing the Island in all it's glory:)

Cheers

Like Daeve says, have you enquired about taking your own ??

I agree as that's 100% likely the avenue i will take even if the engine on my MB must be left at home which is no problem as it'll only take 10 mins for taking off and putting back on the bike again. In the past when i've hired bikes i've always had problems ie: chain coming off, gears slipping/ sticking or just generally a very uncomfortable bike for cycling. Atleast i know by taking mine along with/ without engine it's not going to let me down and @ just 45 euros extra for baggage it'll still work out cheaper than hiring a bike when on site.:D

Cheers

Just to let everyone on here know that I used Ibiza MTB on my holiday last week and I actually think that it was excellent value for their basic mountain bike. Sure, it wasn't top of the range (not even sure it was aluminium), but it looked reasonably new, clean, front suspension, gears worked fine and it was well oiled when I received it.

BTW, they don't have a physical shop, so they actually deliver it to you as a part of the service. I was within their range for a FREE delivery (I was about 15 minutes away from their home/storage facility I think).

I spoke to the guy from the UK before I left and he sent me a form so that I could give him all the criteria he needed to select the right bike for me: height, bike type and even peddle type - he didn't even charge me extra for SPD pedals! For 3-6 days it's €11 / day. I had it for 5 days, so that's €55 inc. free delivery. They asked for a €50 cash deposit on hiring the bike, which I got back in full upon return.

I really don't think that I could ever call their service a rip-off! I wish that I could get a service like that in the UK for that price!

They must have closed down their shop... They had one in St. Eulalia the last time i rented a bike (Feb '12 or maybe Feb '11)....

That may be true. They said that they were coming from St. Eulalia, so that should give people an idea of where they will deliver free too (within 20-30 minutes I believe).

The other thing that was great about their service is that they gave me a time slot for delivery and collection and they stuck to their side of it. However, on the last day that I needed the bike I got delayed, so I called them up - only 2 hours before I was due to give it back - and asked for them to come a bit later. The asked me what times were convenient for me, checked with the driver and got back to me with a new later pick-up slot within 10 minutes. Again, that kind of service is worth £££'s! [Well, €€€'s, I suppose.]
