Best internet protection/virus scan etc?

My free McAfee virus protection software has just run out on my laptop. Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap (free would be good) package that I can buy to protect my laptop? I've got Windows Defender on it already. Do I need something more?

Used it for years and never had a minute's hassle from it!

AVG used to slow my computer so I switched to Avast

We use Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee On-Access Scan for virus protection and Window Washer to wipe off all the kiddie porn sites.
