Best and worst back-to-backs of Ibiza

Hey all,

One of the Spotlight writers is putting together a piece on back-to-back sets in Ibiza. Since they're so in fashion this season, we are compiling a list of some of the best back-to-back sets Ibiza has seen over the years and we need your help. Fire away with suggestions and any descriptions you have are much appreciated! We're also hunting down some disastrous Ibiza back-to-backs, so feel free to have a grumble about those.

It works if the djs telepathically know where the other guy is going and have the tunes to complement each other (eg xpress 2, rub n tug) It's dire if there's no flow because they're just competing egos trying to outdo each other with crowdpleasers

Yeah a few people have mentioned the carl cox nic fanciulli from last year's space closing. I saw the first three tunes then went to bed, because, erm, Amnesia? Any others folks? Perhaps from a good few years ago? Also did anyone see Heidi and Cajmere at Privi opening this year? Apparently they were both singing into the mic in the wee hours of the morning, sounds fun.

Can someone explain when these guys DJs B2B, is it always one record on one and one record off? I play with my mate and we play two on and two off.

So that depends on the dj's preferences. "Back to back" format means two djs at the booth. It could be one on-one off or two on-two off or even half and hour each (totally not cool)

the luciano/carl craig partnership the other year was shockingly bad because it came across like a narcissistic gimmick rather than two skilled djs working in tandem to take their listeners on an interplanetary journey

Best: the power outage night at Space in 2001.

Late August, Sundays (then "Home") @ Space. Sasha + Sander Kleinenberg on the bill -- note that Sander played a much different style back then, more underground, deeper, less trashy. He had something to prove and was playing LEGIT stuff back then. Positioning himself to be the next Sasha.

While one of them was playing (not sure which one), around 3am, suddenly the power went out in the Space discoteca - everything went out. Lights, music, everything. It lasted for at least an hour. I think Pepe even got on the mic to apologize.

Most people left the room and went to hang out on the terrace. A few folks hung around in the empty + silent discoteca...super bummed and too cross-eyed to move.

After most people had given up, they actually got power working again, and out of nowhere came BOTH Sander and Sasha, who apparently decided to go back-to-back for the rest of the night, since the outage messed up their set times so much.

Sasha put on the first record (80% sure it was Gaelle - "Rain"), the club lights flashed on and went back down, and people were running back into the discoteca.

The vibe in a room when everyone starts at EXACTLY the same moment and the same energy level, is just unparalleled. They went on to play B2B until 9 or 10 in the morning. I want to say it was at least 5-6 hours.

Truly the greatest B2B I've ever seen.

Side note: am sure others have similar stories of the magical energy in a room when a club night gets interrupted and then re-starts 30, 60, 90 minutes later. There was a legendary night at Twilo, one of its last before it shut down, where a fire alarm went off and they had to evacuate the whole club onto the street...in the middle of NYC winter. I think it was PVD playing an all-night set. When they let everyone back in, it was the same phenomenon - everyone starting their journey at exactly the same place, and so much energy. I've met several people who were there and still testify it was one of their greatest clubbing experiences.

But for me, Sasha + Sander at Space, the night the power went out.

Well just for starters in recent weeks, I found Jamie Jones b2b Martinez Bros to really compliment one another. Myself not being the biggest Jamie Jones fan found it to add a welcoming bit of firepower to the set

In UK there is Nic Fanciulli b2b Sasha b2b Joris Voorn now. It becomes even more crazy.

Hope I could say the B2B (1 mixer) hawtin/dubfire this week.
Until now a special 14h B2B session Âme Vs Rodhad + Garnier/Dettmann for Nuits Sonores closing party
