Berlin

Heading over to Berlin next month (for the Secretsundaze party over there on the 16th), though have absolutely no idea on where everything is or where we should stay.

We wer hoping to check out some of the larger venues there (Watergate, Tresor, Weekend, PanoramaBar (definitely), Bar 21 etc (not sure if they;re the large venues, though they're the only ones I know)). I spent a day and a half there during the world cup 2006, thogh never got a grasp of where everything is (though went to bar21 on the river and apparently Weekend (or Watergate?) wasn't that far away)

Are they all in a simlar part of town? And in which case, where (area, or specific hotels would be good) would be a good place to stay (would prefer to have a strip of restaurants and civilisation nearby too).

Oh, and if anyone could recommend things other than nightclubs to fill our time with during the day, then that'd be real handy too! I really wouldn't mind check out a museum or something, even if it is a touristy one.

Wow - everyones going to that! Or most of my gang anyway.

I've recently cancelled as I figured I'd rather go to a German night when in Berlin...but that said, it should be amazing!

If you're interested in the cold war and the stasi regime - go to the stasi museum. If you don't give a toss about this then it will bore the tits off you. Personally I love GDR architecture and furniture etc so found it really interesting.

Also the Jewish museum is an absolute must - but not on a comedown. ;)

Some of the more general museums are really interesting also but don't expel all your energy in them learning about the 17-1800s because the 1945 bit is far more interesting.

All the clubs are pretty much in the same area...Watergate is the one on the water. ;)

Berghain can be a challenge if you're in a big group and look like tourists. Make sure you split up if you're in a big group of blokes and keep a low profile on way in...when you gain entry it's all fine and friendly. (Most well groomed towny Spaniards get turned away for example)

The place goes on forever so arrive quite late - 2am onwards??? it'll still be going strong the following eve. Can't remember if you'd said you've been before.

Re: Hotels - there are many but make sure you stay in Mitte or Alexander Platz. West Germany is just like any other European City - East Germany is where the communist blocks and interesting stuff is. If you're there for culture it's probably best to stay further in towards Checkpoint Charlie.

Hope that helps!

Oh and you must have a bottle of wine in the Kunsthaus Tacheles.

It's an art centre and nightclub...used to be a squat b4 the wall came down.

Ace place (there are loads of nice restaurants there if you fancy eating out) and looks a bit like this:

Grrr - REALLY want to go to Berlin now.

Brillian Robder, just what I was looking for, thanks! :D

(We were thinking of going the weekend of SS for not other reason than to ease me in gently, as it were, to the scene, and as half of London appears to be there too and would fancy our chances a bit more getting past the doorstaff).

I went (when i was there for all of 48 hours) to a riverside bar that had an interior and toilets just like that pic above, round the corner from Bar 21. the whole place just looks effortlessly cool (urgh, apologies for the nauseating cliche!) purely due to it's recent history etc. Can;t wait to check it all out.8)

Thanks once again though.

Whens the SS party????

The SecretSundaze (Assuming you don't mean the Schutzstaffel?!) do is on the 16th. Giles and James, along with Jimpster and Jerome Sydenham at Panoramabar 8)

Ooooh! Im booked up for Secret Sundaze too so should see you there! After my November jaunt I couldnt resist the lure so about 4-5 of us going back.

There is a guaranteed entry glist for this one so unless you turn up in your Ben Shermans finest and Rockports should be no hassle! Although I imagine the usual rules will apply to getting into Berghain which is seperate.

In terms of accomodation, if possible would get an apartment. Cheaper than a hotel and you all get your own rooms and a lounge etc....ideal! We stayed in Prenzlauer Berg (lots of cafes & bars) and would either stay there or in Mitte - i.e. the East Central bit. Most lively.

Fri night we are going to either go to Tresor (think old disused evil looking power station - intense!) or Watergate, which I didnt check out last time but has Sebo K on the line up that night.

No one seems to hit the clubs before 2amish anyway so we will probs be drinkingetc in the areas Rob mentions or in some of the bars in Prenzlauer Berg.

Would also recommend this bar called Delicious Donughts which is perfect for a pre or post club bevvie (when its really busy) - really cosy/eclelectic and never seems to close!

During the day - be a culture vulture - so much to see - Def get a walking tour of the city, checkpoint charlie, visit the Reichstag, go to the holocaust memorial & museum, see the wall etc! You'd be gutted to go to Berlin and not get at least a flavour of its history!
