Berlin - tips

Looking to hit Berlin for the first time in November for a weekend. Will be trying to get in the usual places on the Friday but unsure what other stuff to see/do while we are there?

Also, where are the best areas to stay in that are close to transport links and bars/eateries?

Cheers in advance

Berlin is very different. In West Berlin you have a "normal" German city and some areas with higher society and the normal shopping possibilities and brands (KaDeWe, Kurfürstendamm).
I would recommend to stay in "Mitte" or in the East ("Prenzlauer Berg" / "Friedrichshain") where you can find a very alternative scene and a lot of gastronomy. And it's great for shopping (independend brands and small stores). "Neukölln" and "Kreuzberg" are very interesting too, but even more multicultural and sometimes a bit distrubing.

Berlin is very cheap, also the Hotels. I normally stay in the area of the "Ostbahnhof" (train station east) or "Hackescher Markt"/"Alexanderplatz" (very central). There you can find great hotels for fair rates (for example Amani Hotels or "Intercity" where public transport is included in the room rate). Will be there for 55€ per night in July.
If you prefer budget, I can recommend "Days Inn Berlin City South" - you can get a single room starting at about 35-40€ including breakfast. It's in the middle of "Neukölln", right next to the subway. It's a deprived area of Berlin, but I never felt uncomfortable.

resurrected this thread recently..

Alexanderplatz is abit like leicester square/piccadilly circus in london (nowhere near as busy) , its always felt abit cultureless as its essentially a shoping area. (although the filthiest club GoldenGate is nearby).

The Industrial Hostel at Warschauer Strasse is a good option if can get a deal or anything on that street is well located.
It really depends what you are there for and what your priorities are. Hiring bikes is a good way to see some local stuff for the day. remember november its bloody freezing over there!
Dont go to the new 'Bird' restaurant in Kreuzberg if you wana go go to the original one to the north of mitte

I love Berlin but as others have said it is very spread out so you need bit of a plan and idea to make the most of it, else you will stay very central which can be a bit dull.

If you like proper craft beer and good food we spent a solid 9 hours at Dolden Madel Braugasthau which was proper good. Prices were very reasonable and we ended up having lunch and dinner in there.

Agree with Sir. Been to Berlin a few times and generally stayed in what was the Soviet sector. Loads of bars and restaurants. Recommend going up the TV tower too.

One tip I can give you is look at the line ups of who is playing at what club, doormen will question you who are you here to see? Also, try not to look like a tourist.

I made into Watergrate and About Blank on a saturday night, while getting denied at a few other places. Then the next night I got into IPSE and Vissionare.

Most clubs in east berlin are within walking distance or a short cab at worst.
