Berghain (and Watergate) closing?

i've been followign this on Resident advisor....i dont see berghian/watergate closing...thsoe clubs are a license to print money and would still be packed if the entrance fee was 25/30 euros every week rather than 12euros.

what this would mean for the spirit/atmosphere/crowd demogrpahics im not sure, and would probably mean more 'techno tourists' in the place rather than the locals.

They are making alot of money but i think the point is that the government isnt getting any and thats what they are trying to do? They are nearly always in house promotions so they take the door and the bar and the expenses are staff wages and dj fees. nothing much is going to the authorities above normal taxes and they want a slice!

It's not government, is it?
I understood that GEMA is a music licensing collective, like ASCAP in the US.

Judging by my calculations if they increase the ticket price by 1 or 2 euros it would cover this increase in cost so I'm not sure why there's such doom and gloom?

it´s not about berghain or berlin ... the whole club-scene in germany is threatened right now.
here sven´s statement regarding these useless greedy gema-bastardos =>
Not that I support their move, but also don't forget that they collect this money on behalf of the artists whose music you're dancing to. I'd hesitate to call them "bastardos". Dance music producers aren't the richest bunch (until they become superstar DJs )

... don't forget that
they collect this money on behalf of the artists whose music you're dancing to ...

don´t let the gema brainwash you :!:

this "money-collecting for poor artists"-story is just an illusion -
because that point is exactly what these greedy bastardos are NOT doing.
they just collect the money for an extremely restricted circle of selected people.
read sven´s statement !!

"..
Gema -- they are robber barons,
driven by lawyers who ask what can we get and then grab it.
But if I know Berlin, it will go back to an era like the 1990s
when we had a lot of illegal clubs and where the GEMA agent
will have to hunt for the door to get into the cellar
to find out what music is playing."

Agree that producers have the right to make money - illegal downloading is killing music in a lot of ways.

...but this is definitely not a move to protect small fry producers as most of the stuff that's played in these places doesn't get an official release anyway. This is not what these artists would want.

It's the usual capitalist $hite we're used to.

Delighted with this news as I just booked my yearly trip out to Berlin :p First weekend in December, can't wait already since I've had my stint on the white isle

I have to defend them.
I recently joined the US equivalent, ASCAP
congratulation   :x
