Banned / departed forumites???

I have been looking through aged threads today and particularly on the older threads notice a lot of user names that are simply in lower case and with no hyperlink on the name.

Does this mean the user has been banned?

I notice that in a few rare cases "user no longer active" appears under the username.

no, james removed thousands of members who had not posted for years from the database. they're the plain text names, banned members have the 'no longer active' message.
