Bank chgs - worth claiming back?

I've totalled up the amount of bank charges I have paid over the last few years. It's only about £200, but that's money I could do with having rather than not.
I looked online at moneysavingexpert.com and they claim that these charges are illegal and I should claim them back. I followed all the instructions and wrote to my bank asking for the money back. Surprise surprise, they wrote back refusing this.
Now, on the website, it says I should threaten to take them to court. It all sounds a bit scary!! I'm thinking is it worth it for £200? I don't want to end up with a load of court fees 8O But then again if the money was wrongly taken, shouldn't I claim it back?

Can anyone give me any advice :?

I know, if it was £2500 I would probably do it, there is more to gain than lose. On the website it says the court costs could be about £100 if you lose... not sure if its worth it?!

What charges are these? The bank I work for, I work on the cheques team and I'm one of the 'orrible people that take the processing charges

YES. Do it. I'm claiming back £4643 from HBOS. I've already had an offer from them of £3199 which I refused as I want it all and I know I'll get it. Get on it as soon as you can, it's your money.

Taking the bank to the small claims court is nothing to worry about as long as you get your paperwork right. the banks have won a small number of cases because of this.

As stated above go to consumeractiongroup.co.uk

Good advice there for all stages of your claim.

Good luck.

I claimed back £1950, they offered me £1490, hence the reason why ibiza is gonna be so good for me this year!

8 days to go people!

Ok I'm gonna do it. Hopefully they'll just pay up as it is such a small amount. That'll cover my spending money in Ibiza for the closings though :D

Without sounding rude, how on earth do you run up £4643 in bank charges? 8O

This is what happenes to peopl when they suddenly get hit with 4 or 5 charges in a couple of days and the whole thing just spirals out of control.

The bank decided to pay a new DD I setup for the 1st time which was £500+. Rather than call me to say was I aware of this (like a real customer focused organisation would do) they just paid over the money when I only had half that amount in the bank at the time. Then all my switch payments from the weekend got cleared but the funds were already gone so I was hit with 7 or 8 charges totalling over £250. To make things worse my card was still accepted the next day and this also rang up more charges. The first I knew of all this was the next day when I got the letter saying we paid the £500 for you and will charge you x, y, z.

Total for 4 days was £380 in charges. Thats went I decided I wanted all my charges back.

It took me a few months and I did not go to court but agreed to pay £4.00 for each charge which the Halifax accepted

Im so glad you posted this cos I need to send a letter to claim mine back. Natwest owe me £500 and I lost the letter template that I had to send :?

Do you need to send your statements with the letter or can you just send the letter? Also is the letter posted above ok as a first letter to send? (if that makes sense lol!) ;)

SS - did you get your bank to send all your statements for £10? if so you have to send these with your letter.

Actually I have just read that letter and it says to refund them into my account. I no longer have an account with Natwest am I able to just request a cheque?
