hombre uno: what did the planners have in mind for dealing with this situation?
hombre dos: what planners?

Having the only river in the Belearics was not enough for the powers that be in Ibiza, so they built a second, this one lined with concrete.

the thing i like best about the motorways is the gardens in the central reservation. they have no irrigation system so every couple of days a water tanker crawls down the fast lane with a guy walking alongside holding a hosepipe to water the plants.

no doubt this takes place at rush hour.............so that just about wipes out the remaining few mins the autopista saved you on your journey!:confused:

Even though it was two against one, Pedro was astounded to discover that in an hour he had cleared exactly the same distance of flood water as his two lazy amigos....

Heavy Rain

Intense rainfall brought chaos to the road network in Ibiza,
as once again various tunnels flooded, causing long delays.

Police had to close several roads due to the rain,
which fell at its heaviest on Tuesday evening.
The Ibiza-Airport road was again one of the first to be affected,
as 74 litres of water per square metre fell over a twelve hour period.
Fire crews were quickly on the scene of the tunnel on the airport road,
but traffic had to be diverted for several hours.

For the first time the tunnel at San Rafael on the Ibiza-San Antonio road
was severely affected and had to be closed for five hours
after mud slides blocked part of the road at the entrance to the tunnel.
The tunnel at Puig den Valls, close to Jesus was also affected and had to be
closed during the early hours of Wednesday, up until mid-afternoon.

However, as far as litres of water, San Juan recorded the most rain
with 107 litres per square metre.
Several restaurants and bars were flooded and emergency crews
had to help staff at the Hacienda Hotel in Na Xamena for several hours
after the heavy downpour.

The following day the minister for transport, Albert Prats, revealed he had informed
workers in his department to close the tunnels at Puig den Valls and San Jordi
the next time the island was under the threat of heavy rain.
He claimed that at the moment it was the only option open to him to ensure safety,
after several cars became stuck in the tunnels on Thursday ...

He continued by adding that it was his administration's priority to try and assess
what exactly is the problem with the tunnels.
If it proves to be a design fault, then it will be the Consell who have to foot the bill
for the work of re-doing them.

Road Works

Several large cracks in the tarmac are set to force the Consell Insular
to close parts of the new roads in order to resurface them.

The areas affected are
- the flyover from Ibiza to Santa Eulalia,
- the roundabout at Ca na Palleva and
- the roundabout at Can Cifre, driving towards San Jordi.

The second was found personally by the Minister for Roads, Albert Prats.
He assured citizens that while the cracks did not, at the moment,
pose any risk to drivers they would have to be urgently repaired,
which will cause the roads to be closed for several weeks.

The company who built the dual-carriageways has already been informed
and work may start as soon as next week.

The problem originates from a combination of the wrong tarmac being used
and the ground below not being compacted enough before the tarmac was laid.
The roads will have to be dug up, the surface below suitably compacted
and another type of tarmac used.
