For years Nationwide's Flexaccount was the only debit card that didn't charge for overseas spending, and for a big chunk of that time it was totally free to use abroad. However, that all stops from 1 November 2010, when it's increasing the load to 2% both in Europe and Worldwide, and charging £1 for every cash withdrawal. If you already have one, its fine to use until then, but after that ditch and switch if it's your overseas spending tool (read the full MSE News story: Nationwide hikes overseas charges.

thanks for this ... me and the missus load up our nationwide account before going anywhere in the world and have done for years....

i suppose it was only a matter of time :?

tip is the draw you limit for each day of 300 euro;s.your still winning anyway as this card gives you a far better rate than others.by the time its changed and shows on your statements.
you must press euro when asked to a atm.

Have a look at the Post Office Credit Card

Woodruffe is right, you get a far better exchange rate, even though you do pay 2% plus a £1 fee. And its still cheaper than any of the other banks

I am. I fly out to Ibiza on the 12th Sept and this doesn't kick in til November, so it'll be my last 0% holiday. But... they do give you free travel insurance (which I believe starts right now) to soften the blow.

I also have a Post Office credit card for purchases/meals, etc. Maybe I have to go old school and get traveller's cheques for next years holiday.

Most of the cards include travel insurance of some sort now but its the small print you have to read as most dont cover for pre-existing medical conditions , they will cover you with a massive extra payment for it ,

as the saying goes you dont get anything for nowt ,

I have found out its been cheaper to insure direct as the extra loading on the credits cards has been working out more than direct cover and thats with declare pre-existing medical conditions

for free insurance its £750 a month you have to put in your account.

That's where my salary goes so it's cool.

Yeh fair enough, I was a little dubious. Luckily I've no existing conditions but will be sure to read the small print. I usually get insurance from "Insura and go" whcih is pretty cheap and covers the things I tend to worry about like lost luggage, missing flights, etc.

i use Insure and go for the year.used to have a natwest or is a gatwest.gold card.what a waste £12.00 a month .ok you got insured but as for offers they gave you waste of time for me.

yeah I have used Insura and go before now but with www.getmy.com this time I just do a search more for the medical insurance as my house contents cover for the others

Just hope none of us need it ( its one of those things we have to get and hope we dont use )
happy holidays

I have Athsma - so I rang Nationwide and declared it. They will cover my athsma free of charge. I've read the small print and it seems really good cover.

Post Office credit card? Tell me more....is this free withdrawls too?

Its always cheap to take cash and change at money exchange bureau. There is a really good one in santa eulalia just off the main street

Great idea. Especially when your wallet is nicked or your room broken into.

Always better to take cards. At least 2. One on you and the other hidden in a safe place. The fees for withdrawals are never that much and the exchange rate is always better than at a retail exchange.
