got the keys to new house, so we walked in and on the kitchen worktop, amongst all the crap to with how to work the boiler, what day bins go out etc there was a little card from the lady that we bought off, just a card saying good luck etc, but at the end she said that in the cupboard under the stairs was a bible & a crucifix, which was there when she bought the house 3 years prior, apparently it's bad luck if you remove it?? I've never heard of this before? has anyone else?? :?

Yes I have 8O

I think it's best you just leave them exactly where they are and don't worry about it.
It's not in Amityville is it?? :D

During the Blitz, many people took refuge under the stairs, during bombing raids.

It was common practise to affix religious artifacts in this area as a way of "keeping the area safe".

f you look under the floor boards you will probably find the bones of the first born child who will have been sacrificed also.

Yeah it is mate. (not the latter) - whether or not that's what those are in your cupboard, i don't know? how old do they look?

I would remove them myself. 8O

I bought a big old Victorian terraced house last year (the money pit) and we recently found out that the two houses next door - which are of a different style - were flattened and four people killed during the bombing raids.

So i asked some of my older relatives about it and they told me about hiding in the cupboards under the stairs during the raids.

Apparently there was a big measles epidemic and you weren't allowed into the public shelters if you had a contagious disease / condition - so you had to sit the raids out at home!
So they made the cupboards as comfy as possible.

Written eons ago JJ. Didn't you have R.E. at school?

I'm half way through totally restoring the house, it's a labour of love alright. But you can't beat big old terraced houses for style and character. (and the odd hidden crucifix) ;)

Seems victorian terraces are in with the Spotlight chaps - I also have one, although restoration has not moved much in the last two years...
