am sitting here in the office and have just realised how bad this job is for me. the bosses are fairly ok and the money is good but in a way thats the problem - it's become too easy to stay.
Am thinking of a total change but it would mean a major pay cut - I know happiness in work and life are paramount but there are the harsh realities of mortgages etc....... not to mention funding a social life!
I could very easily hand in my notice right now and not have a single regret... other than the fact that I have no job to go to!!

Advice badly needed and greatly appreciated......

I have recently handed my notice in, I work for a good company and have a pretty good job but it just doesnt make me happy sitting in an office!

I'm leaving to go work overseas for Thomas Cook and it's the best decision I ever made, Its easier for me as I live at home and I don't have any commitments like a mortgage.

There are others from the board who have done similiar things aswell.

I say you should do what makes YOU happy ;)

I went through the same process last year - good money but no fulfilment

I ended up making a list of all the attributes I have that I would consider to be my strengths.
Then how many I actually used in my current job.

Then I listed all the things I like doing that are work related - negotiating, project managing, conceptual stuff etc. etc.

I ended up realising that I would be better doing a similar job (I have all the skills) but in a different industry that I was actually interested in.

Just my own personal experience but I am enjoying what I do now a whole lot more than my last job :)

I'd say definately do it... even if it doesn't work out, at least you've got the experience in your current job to fall back on. Imagine if you thrive at whatever it is you dream of doing, and end up with a job you've always dreamed of :D

I was thinking of having a career change, but I'm currently studying aswell, so I'm going to wait until I've finished my exams, then probably change careers 8O

I handed my notice in about a year ago, I'd been with the same company for 5-6 years and up til the last year loved my job but then I moved to another department and my job description changed loads and my boss was a complete tw@t. In the end it was making me so miserable I went in one day and handed my notice in. They asked me to stay but I was adamant I wanted to leave, even tho I didn't have a clue what I was going to do. Some people thought I was being stupid and hasty leaving a really good job but the people that matter to me supported me completely.

Then rather than rush into something that I wasn't totally sure about I did some freelancing and temping and also spent some time just being a ladieee of leisure lol. I then had an interview last November for my dream job, got it and started in the New Year. Taking time out from the rat race can do you the world of good cos it alters your perspective on things, gives you time to think what you really want out of life etc etc. I did have a few setbacks along the way, losing out at very last stage on one interview and cancelling another really good final interview cos I was doing some freelancing which was then cut short. However I kept positive thru it all and never once did I think I wish I'd not left my old job.

Life's too short to be unhappy at work, think thru your options and then go for it and don't look back :D

Not sure chewie.... I would love to get into acting - I'm not talking the dream of the silver screen (although it would be nice!) but I did a course before and loved it - its a hard slog though from what I've heard.
Other than that definately something where I'm meeting people, maybe event management, promotion, sales, something like that - no experience though!

Jam Man - I kinda did a similar thing and I know I'm leaving my strenghts/atttibutes at home when I'm at work.... fair play to you for going for it!

ok, since nobody has said otherwise i will, think through your options carefully. dont just go f*** it and walk out, the suggestion before about getting a similar job in an industry you enjoy seems like the best bet to me. id never leave a job if i didnt have another to go to, but then maybe that makes me boring. anyway, id hate to think of some board member running up to his boss and slapping them on the strength of everyone on a forum telling him to! all im saying is think carefully!!! but to the rest of you, before you flame me for a being a boring jobsworth twat, i do admire the balls it must have taken you to go do what you wanted to do. maybe i'll get like that in a bit, time will tell...

DAMN - there I was planning the 'bosses office' scene from Fight Club :D

I know what you mean about not leaving without somewhere else to go to - thing is I can't do that, however much I want to!

Tell me about it, I would LOVE to just walk right out of the job I'm in now. But unfortunately the fact that I have to pay rent/car loan/credit card each month means I can't
Instead I sit here all day waiting for poxy agencies to call and they never do GRRRR! :x

YES i am.. but i know for a fact that what im doing right now ins't what i want, and as Barbie said, Life's tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo short to be unhappy at work...

wish me luck 8) ... and also, good luck to yo'all..

good luck Mr Stoned! hope your new job brings with it all you desire (as well as some new eye candy to look at, which being honest is what everyone hopes for when they start a new post :))

i packed in everything in my 40's after 20 years accounting. learned a new trade, learned a new language, moved to a different country, and now i'm finally doing what i wanted to do when i was at university.
still wish i was an accountant though :D

Thats cool man - seriously, that takes guts to do and fair play to you. I just hope I can say the same in a couple of years!

you don't think i'm on here because i find young people's bored at work banter interesting do you?

i write various things for spotlight and some magazines in the mornings and i teach english in the afternoons.

i'm writing an article for a new magazine called trip for their june issue.

i have a contract with spotlight to write the news and hotel or restaurant web pages. i don't receive anything for being a mod here - i do it because i really like ibiza and want more people to come.
