hello all as you may know the dvla have scraped the paper part of the driving licence ,has anyone had any problems either getting the code to hire a car or any problems in Ibiza ,and has it made any difference to picking the cars up with more waiting time
hope someone can advices cheers

I use Atesa who don't care what endorsements you have on your licence so don't need to check driving history. Just the plastic card needed no stress at all.

When I've had a car they only take a copy of paper with license on to they haven't 'made it obvious' to look at it but I can't imagine there being a problem.
A. It's UK that scrapped it
B. They want your hard earned wonga, as long as you don't rent from a cowboy operation they'll be more then happy to take your cash:)

I picked up a car from Moto Luis a few weeks back and they didn't even ask to see the paper part of my license, so I imagine you'd be fine

The problem companies are Avis, Hertz, Europcar which state in their T&Cs a load of restrictions on who they will rent cars to and also stipulate that the new code must be provided (it's very easy to get btw with your NI number and driving licence number - takes about 2 minutes). Also you won't be insured unless the licence conditions of those companies are met which is why they have this requirement. The other companies - very easy going.

Used Hertz last week - had the code - but didn't have to use it - all they were interested in was my license & Hertz booking reference.

What is this code? Does this pertain only to UK licenses? I have a Canadian driver's license and have never had any trouble, but am wondering this time because the provider will go through avis.

I've read through the conditions but they don't say anything about a code. We also don't have a paper part to our licenses, so hope that won't be a problem when I arrive at midnight.

Never even asked for my dvla code and pretty much dismissed my paper counterpart. Used doyouspain.com / goldcar. The CDW is bit of a issue tho....

Ahhh... paid €49.50 for CDW with doyouspain.com but then at Goldcar hire desk they still wanted €950 block on a credit card. When I said could you take more if there was an accident she said yes. Scared me a bit knowing that and would it be a nightmare getting back my money through doyouspain.com ? I don't rate their customer service.

In the end I paid €144 for an insurance at the Goldcar desk and no more and I used a credit card with a low limit on it even if they did try to get more it would be blocked.

Maybe me being a little paranoid, dunno :)

They are complete tw@ts apparently. I booked with them last week through a well known uk broker as they were very cheap for a Ford Focus (or similar!). I read some reviews and basically came to the conclusion that unless you take their full excess waiver it was a dodgy as a nine Euro note.

Anyway, after some looking around I booked through Ibiza Spotlight.

Its priced in Euros, so good if paying in £'s
I got a free 2nd driver
The excess is only 500 (it may even be less)
The booking was simple and only a small deposit
Airport collection on site
It was the cheapest for a group C car at £211 (at that days exchange rate) for a week in July

Has anyone had any trouble with denying the CDW?

I have a credit card that covers it anywhere in the world, but when I've gone to Spain, they seemed confused about this, particularly in Ibiza.

It does cost quite a bit extra and I've had my credit card/insurance company write a letter staying that they will cover all, so I don't need to get the CDW.

In the letter it states that my credit card/insurance assumes all liabilty should there be a problem.

It doesn't seem as common in Europe ( My cc is Canadian) to have thesecar rental insurance policies thatcome along with the credit card.

Two years ago, the car hire company didn't get it at all and basically told me I had to take out their CDW even though I was totally covered through my credit card.
Am bringing a copy of the letter this time, hopefully it makes a difference.

You dont have to take any excess insurance at all, its a risk you bare.
But, the unscrupulous hire companies insist on a credit card that they can block x amount, 2000 euros in the case of goldcar. Then, when you dont want to take their excess ins, which can be as much as the totsl hire, they either;
Bully or scare you taking it.
Find "damage" to your car on return.
Hit you with bullsh1t fee ie. Car not returned full with fuel when they manage to squeeze an extra 3 cents at the depot pump on return.
