Another Car Hire Question

Hello i could do with some advice from the wise people among you :)

Generally is it better to sort it out before you go or maybe just go along somewhere in PdB and get one for a couple of days off the cuff? We are definitely wanting to hire one for 1 or 2 days at the start of our trip before the rest of our friends turn up on day 4 and then it starts to get a bit messy.

We've got flights with Norwegian and they have sent an email saying we could get a car from 10am on Monday through til 2pm on Wednesday for less than £55 which seems a decent deal. It also says that includes insurance, charges, unlimited mileage and we pay for a full tank of petrol then they refund what's left when we take the car back.

I've never hired a car anywhere before so i would like to know if that's a good deal? Will there be a load of hidden charges once we pay the deposit? How much would they take on my credit card as excess and when is it refunded if we get it back in one piece?

Also if anyone could recommend a decent company and sort of explain the whole process to me ie what documents do we need (drivers licence excluded lol) is it better to get insurance with existing company before we go? As i said i've never hired a car before so don't want to jump into it thinking i've got a bargain and it ends up costing hundreds.

Cheers peeps

Price-wise that sounds cheap and depends on which car hire provider you use / their terms and conditions. Starting there would be a good bet. A lot of intermediaries won't tell you who the car hire company is until you've paid. I almost exclusively rent direct from companies who actually supply the cars and put their identities along with T&Cs up-front along with all their charges. So who would actually be renting you the car ? Can get onto the insurance stuff from there.

The partial refund of unused petrol thing sometimes comes with conditions like no refund if less that 1/4 tank used etc etc. It all depends on the company.

Give me your exact dates and I'll run you a couple of comparative rentals direct from companies who will put their conditions clearly on the table. Are you picking up in PDB or from the airport ?

I thought you would reply first haha! We are planning Mon 1st Sept and Tues 2nd Sept. Not sure if it's best to pre book or just walk into somewhere in PdB and get something on the day? Neither of us have a clue what to do so any advice is much appreciated. The companies are Gold Car and Centauro if that helps

Goldcar I would not touch with a barge pole. They will most likely try to sell you an expensive excess protection policy and if you don't take it will then try to tell you that you will be liable for the whole car value. Whatever happens the experience using them is rarely short of traumatic ! Centauro were OK in Barcelona for rentals up to 3 days but haven't tried them in Ibiza or checked their local island T&Cs. Neither company is what I'd call terribly 'reputable' and would be well down my choice list !

I'd rent from Hiper over both those companies. Just get a cab to their office opposite the airport from Bossa or get the bus to the airport and have them meet you there. Hotel delivery/collection is 24Euros each way so cheaper to get a cab to them. Cars aren't the newest but it's Ibiza and a few scratches when you pick up the car saves you being held liable for every tiny thing when you take it back. Just make sure all marks are noted on the contract when you collect. They are quoting 57-58Euros all-in (as opposed to £).

You can browse through conditions, extras, insurance etc. on their website and everything is completely up-front. For rentals up to 3 days, just fill up the car and return it full. There is no charge for fuel as it's full-to-full, but they may take a deposit off you or pre-authorize your card to guard against you returning it half-full etc. This is always refunded/released provided you return full (always way cheaper than pre-paying fuel with a car-rental company). Also they change no cancellation fees as the middle men are all cut out of the equation if you book through their website.

Then take out an excess protection policy which means you can claim back any damage costs including to glass and tyres, misfuelling, loss of keys etc. These are almost always excluded from hire companies' 'comprehensive' policies included in quoted prices. The price for 3 days is about £6-£7 depending on level of cover taken and covers claims up to £2k+ typically. More info here for example : http://www.worldwideinsure.com/car-hire-excess-insurance.php.

Walking in and renting on the spot is almost always considerably more expensive than pre-booking / pre-paying.

Motoluis are about 80Euros for a Fiat Panda. On-airport car hire from the big boys is about £120+ (likely with about £800 - £1,400 excess depending on the company). So that gives you some comparatives anyway.

I made a similar thread and no-one replied, so this is helpful.

I've found many companies to be cheaper than Moto Luis, but I'm guessing they're all a bit "dodgy"? Moto Luis are at least endorsed by Spotlight, so you know what you're getting.

I need a car from 8 -15 Sept. Moto Luis are currently charging 204E (about £160). Travel Supermarket have LOADS of cheaper options, from £90, but there's names like Argus, Holiday Autos, Atlas Choice, RentalCars.com. I'm guessing they're just brokers and there'll be stupid charges thrown in?

Totally stuck as to what to do.

Bkrent did not refund 600€ to a friend of mine and if u take a look on tripadvisor is full of people complaining about them for the same reason

Not good!

Remember too guys, if you get back home and the company won't refund your deposit on your credit card, phone your card company and ask them to do a chargeback. Can be a pain in the arse, but protects you against dodgy companies claiming "damage" when you're already back home.

I have used Motoluis and Centauro, both been ok. Motoluis brought the car to the airport, and Centauro have a shuttle bus to take you to collect, only 5 mins away.
