after my second full season as a worker here are the proud winners of the 'golden record needle'-
my personal ibiza clubbing awards. of course they are highly subjective :)

biggest shooting star: andrea oliva. his accessible sets with a commercial appeal were tailor-fit for ushuaia and helped make ants the success it was. in many ways he is the true successor of luciano, who by embracing his roots this season distanced himself musically from ushuaia and its typical audience.

best new night: ants. especially BEFORE the party moves to the big stage and becomes just another ushuaia night it is fantastic. the atmosphere around the pool is one of a kind and by the clever position of the dj booth it is the only party where people are actually looking at each other and not face the dj like at a concert. musically it was great too !

worst night: wisdom of the glove. ok, just went there once (in july) but it was really bad. a party where the host and headliner starts only at 4.30 am to play for a meagre 90 minutes is a farce. numberswise it was embarassingly empty until 3 o clock, afterwards there were probably 1000 people and a poor atmosphere.

best night: cocoon. close race, but after I chose ENTER as the best night of 2012 it had to be cocoon this year with ENTER finishing second.their clever concept of really long sets instead of the artist overload that was ENTER made the atmosphere much better. with awesome guests and väth in impressive shape cocoon had a tremendous season.

loser of the season: privilege. it either had to be eden, privilege or boom. but at least eden and boom really tried, whereas privilege apparently didn't bother with boring parties and/or poor numbers at the better parties in vista club.

jinx of the season: defected. great lineups and big plans for 2013 - alas with booom they had a pretty unreliable and unstable partner and the ushuaia tower location never took off. didn't have a bad season, but could have done much better with the effort they put into this summer.

track of the season: most heard was definitely gotham - ten walls. my personal track of the summer though was sabb - illusiones. championed by karotte at the space terrace for instance. the break in this track is unreal !

surprise of the season: loco dice. I never liked his style and way of djing. but this summer he blew my mind. his enter set was one of my highlights and his ushuaia debut party fared better than lucianos night. maybe it's just me but he really broadened his musical approach this year (also doing a defected compilation).

best club: once again space. awesome lineups and residents, best security, best organization at the door, best staff, best sound system and with the terrace my favourite floor on this island. just amazing what they are doing.

best compilation of the summer: vagabundos 2013 (merveille/mirko loko). with ilario alicantes mix cd for cocoon a close second.

biggest pain in the ass: pickpockets. this was my seventh year in ibiza and I think as crime is concerned it is the worst year so far.

douche of the year
: the guy(s) who smashed my car window while parking at cala comte. of course there was nothing inside to steal, i am not stupid you moron.

the 'gotta be kidding me' award: amnesia for raising drink prices mid season, especially for their wodka red bull at 23 euros now!

best beach club: sa trinxa. vibe is amazing, superb music (not just by jon sa trinxa) and good food at fair prices.

the charlie chaplin award for atmosphere goes to: ELROW. please go to this party!

best restaurant: jockey club salinas. the oriental chicken-thingy i had was sensational.

special award for outstanding contribution: the ibiza discobus. thank you for everything you've done for me.

Interesting. One of the things I loved most about my Summer away from Ibiza (1st in many years) was being free of being on my guard against THEFT the whole time. Can't relax without walking miles from everyone and burying all your valuables and car keys under a rock, especially near or on beaches. The habit's hard to kick - spent the 1st half of Summer on the South West coast of UK swimming out to rock islands with my stuff to leave it somewhere safe whilst I went off exploring above and below the water line. By the end I realized I could leave camera, smartphones and all my clothes on the beach and find them all there untouched when I got back. It was worth giving up the Mango Daiquris and swapping a live DJ for an mp3 mix and set of headphones for. Being able to relax alone and treat the great outdoors like your own living room without being robbed is hard to put enough of a value on.

Oh - and swapping vodka redbulls (at 23 Euros or any other price) for iced tea. Got to October not feeling like I've abused myself to the point of needing 2 weeks in a rehab and an anger management course - and a remortgage !

Space has been my favourite club for quite a while. Knock this out and I think I might finally hang my hat up outside the nearest billboard. Maybe a one-off night at Amnesia or Vista but I think DC-10's gone over to the other side for the time being. Would be great if Music On could be substituted by a Loco Dice night next year. That might draw me out again. Seeing as Ushuaia's consigned to Room 101 for the duration - and I don't like pool parties much at the best of times. Hope Elrow returns - not the best musically but the most fun night to be had on the island. Glad to hear Cocoon's back on form .
