an education in hip hop

the 4 part series "hip-hop evolution" on netflix is pretty good on the early years - though it does miss a lot out after 1990 (wot no De La Soul?!)

What Wu tang were doing in 93 really needs to be thought about when hip hop at the time was very much more funk loops , party rhymes and general b boy skills. I love all that stuff and before bit their perfectly produced bleak look on real life for thugs was a first surely. Different to NWA as they wernt shouting or trying to change wider things , just surviving and documenting.

Same as Mobb Deep - The Infamous LP in i think 95. so bleak and depressing but timeless

Hip hop hooray... All weekend on BBC 6 music . Celebrating 30 years since the release of Eric b and rakims album - paid in full.

This is hip hop/rap. Whatever you like to call it!

The East coast always did it for me, Main Source, Gang Starr, Master Ace, Mobb Deep, Showbiz and AG, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, the list goes on.

I heard Big E Smalls Ready to Die album and thought that's as good as it's gonna get, and ducked out of Hip Hop at that point. Visited a mate at his Uni in Middlesborough and went to a Cream night, then next night saw Roger Sanchez at Sugar Shack and that was that, house music all night long.

The late 80s early 90s was an amazing time to be into Hip Hop.
