How’s Ibiza been for you this summer personally?
This summer has been a vast improvement for me personally as it`s the first time in 7 years I`ve not done the whole season. Last year was HELL as Darren "We Love (your money)” Hughes decided to cancel my Sunday residency the day before the season started. And my missus got a tit job, went mental on K and ran off with Clive Henry. Don`t want to sound bitter but... I am! what can you do?
So I knuckled down this year and franchised ververywrongindeed all over Europe, spent a lot of time in Berlin and back in the UK and worked my 3 arses off! My record label is the most exciting thing I`ve done for a very long time. Got to say without sounding twee, the look on young producers’ faces when you tell them you are going to sign them is worth it just for that. I`m some sort of YTS scheme! (for the younger readers; the 1980`s youth training scheme for the DHSS) And getting back in the studio an awful lot was ace.
Basically as an Ibiza resident I`ve been in a dream state of semi retirement for too long and I`ve got RIGHT back on it this year, work wise. Believe it or not this is a job! So Ibiza was ideal for me this year. In and out, the barest hand picked minimum gigs. Just carefully picked residencies like Superfreq at Dc10 and workers parties and the odd free event. 100% proper. No disco mafia, know what I mean?
I had a 10 day holiday too for the 1st time and never ventured south of Santa Gertrudis once... and barely spoke any English for the first time in years. Brilliant. I learned it is totally possible to have too much of a good thing. I`ll save semi retirement for when I can afford it. The best things are enjoyed in small doses or you lose the appreciation of them very quickly.
How do you think the Ibiza season has been generally?
Bigger than ever but more uniform than ever. Every year the moaners moan and the tills ring ever louder. Everywhere sounds the same. Ibiza venues are SO slow on the uptake. Privilege trying to imitate Cocoon and DC10 SO badly on weird nights like Tuesdays and Sundays. Same music everywhere. Same old names. Much harder to do a free party than ever before. LOADS harder. The usual manufactured hype and politics.
I dunno, myself I don`t understand why anyone would go to a club in Ibiza when there is so much to see and do. You spend a minimum of about 200 euros in a club. If you and your mates went to the supermarket and hired a small system and got some gear in you`d have a better time round your pool. Guaranteed. I wondered down to a cave I know and there were 100 hippies bollock naked dancing and saluting the setting sun. I was straight off with my kecks and in there, made some percussion out of peppercorns they had for their barbecue in two paper cups. I was off!
I was doing a documentary for the BBC and I went everywhere this year and hated the clubs for the first time. It`s not that I`m too old, it`s just one or two phone calls and I get to Richie Hawtin`s villa party or a Cave Rave, know what I mean? Sorry to sound a twat but if you are in any business long enough you get perks.
What’s been the highlight of your Ibiza season?
I guess finally realising after 15 years there is more to Ibiza than the clubs. Exactly like Glastonbury, I never go the `proper` bits but spend a week on the fringes. I go into Ibiza now, see my mates, have great meals and parties and don`t spend 1000 euros behind a millionaires bar.
Or it might be when I went to Oakey`s luxury villa for a meeting and he answered the door in his underpants dipping a chip in a polystyrene pot of baked beans, I had to excuse myself immediately as I had the raging ****s. He didn`t have any bog roll and was wiping his arse with the Sun. I went back in and said "since you`ve been in L.A mate... you`ve changed..." Funny as ****. Got to say he`s still the most normal superstar DJ by miles, whatever you think of him.
And the lowlight?
Not a lowlight really but tromping up Dalt Vila (the old town) dressed as a Roman Centurion to show the BBC documentary why the Romans never conquered it. I nearly had a ****ing cardiac! and I used to live up there!
Best set you’ve seen in Ibiza?
Magda in one room and Richie Hawtin in the other at Cocoon and being able to see/dance to both from the VIP depending on where you stood. I was rushing from one end to another off my chops. Or probably Hawtin, Vath, Villalobos and Luciano all playing together sat on a big sofa at Richie`s villa while I floated in the pool like a grinning dolphin.
How do you think the closures earlier on in the summer have, and will, affect Ibiza?
Same thing happens every year in one form or another. The politicians have to be seen to do something yet they tacitly allow a lot to go on. In over a decade of travel I never saw one, I`ll say again, NOT ONE person get searched on the way in. The coastguard only work on 2 days of the week. Know what I mean? If they really wanted to crack down they could. Hard. It`s pure showbiz. Always has been. No effect whatsoever every year, except to hype. Co-incidence? I don`t think so do you?
Your favourite Ibiza story…
When a certain German manager just had the Amnesia liquid nitrogen jets put in and said in the office in a REALLY loud German accent... "ven do zey turn on the Gas?". I said diplomatically "in clubbing terms it`s called a `jet` mate. Never call it gas!" (at least not in that accent).
Or last week one of my BBC colleagues in a very posh voice (who`d never been in a superclub) in the VIP saying to the doorman "See here! an Englishman does not enjoy being jostled one bit!” Priceless.
Actually better than that. My old mate Johnny Golden, the Manumission Dwarf, rolled up pissed to Superfreq with ten Manumission girls and was raging pissed off they couldn`t all get in free. Richard (Mr C) said... "look mate you and two are in free no worries... and we`ll do you a deal for the rest..." Johnny looked up at him and said "I`m not Happy" and Richard said... "which one are you then?" ****ing priceless. I laughed about a week. Johnny did too as it happens.
Predictions for next summer?
Same hype, different bull****.
Top 3 Ibiza tunes of this year?
Dunno. I never listen I just dance.
