A review of Mykanos!

Well just got back! Review to come and I hope it will be of interest to you Ibiza veterans.

Defo would like to hear as i may be going next summer.... could help in being the deciding factor!! Let us know. They did a piece on the Olympics last night and the way they described it sounded JUST like Ibiza.... :!: Let us know. :)

Okay I went over there for two weeks and stayed in Mykanos Town.

Now to make things a little easier to understand imagine Mykanos Island as being similar in shape to Ibiza.

Mykanos Town is very similar to Ibiza Town, full of small bars, restaurants, a few clubs and narrow winding streets which get busy after midnight with glamorous and beautiful people.

All the beaches, including Super Paradise, which is their version of Bora Bora, are on the other side of the island, which is their equivalent of driving over to San Antonio.

This is also where all the clubs are located. Clubs such as Cavo Paradiso and Club Pacha.

It doesn't have very good roads. Every time you drive somewhere its as if you are taking part in the World Rally Championships, so care has to be taken.

Mykanos has absolutely no drugs scene whatsoever. What this means is that everyone is just drinking, and those Ibiza veterans who believe they are truly hardcore will suffer trying to last the pace in Mykanos.

Nobody goes out till after midnight and at this time the place to be is the Town. Its bars are varied and busy. There is lots to do and discover but unlike Ibiza there is no big night to look forwards to such as Manumission or Pure Pacha, where you know everybody is going to go onto afterwards.

The people are a lot more stylish than in Ibiza, and dare I say it the girls are a lot more attractive. People are also a lot friendlier and approachable. The absence of any drugs scene can really be noticed and its refreshing talking to a girl without the subject of "e" or "coke" popping up.

Their is a club in Mykanos called Space, which has similar nights to Space Ibiza. We went a few nights, the music was great but the crowd wasn't that good. Neither was the club, which reminded me of a cheesy disco in 80s London.

People go to Cavo Paradiso at 7am! to party, and this is after drinking heavily all night in Mykanos Town. See what I mean about being headstrong without any additives! We never made it.

We did make a Friday night visit to Club Pacha however, which is located next to Cavo, for a subliminal party with Eric Morrillo and crew.

What can I say; Eric was on top form as always. The crowd however was pretty crap, full of young Italian boys.

After this visit we didn't bother visiting that side of the island again, apart from a Sunday visit to Super Paradise which was absolutely excellent.

Instead we focussed ourselves on Mykanos Town, and knocked raving on the head. As soon as we did this we began to have a lot of fun. Focussing on the bars, we mingled more with the locals, and visitors from Athens. Our holiday became what holidays used to be about before Ibiza, that is relaxing, and we all came away with a phone book of new contacts and fond memories.

To conclude, if you go to Mykanos looking for Ibiza you will be disappointed. If you got to Mykanos for what it has to offer you will be surprised. It is full of cool, beautiful and friendly people. The nightlife is different but still has a lot to offer. I will be going back.

review of Mykanos

Great review Venom! Sounded like a pretty awesome time you had. Were you overall more pleased w/ your time in Ibiza? I think it's all in how you look at it and what your preference is. Like you say, if you go w/ an open mind and enjoy as is, it would probably be a new and wonderful experience. I like the friendly people part - that is SO important when you are travelling b/c it can really make/break a holiday! I wonder how much of a good time i would have b/c i am of the 'other' persuasion ;) I heard it's been very popular w/ the gays over there for years. Did you see many? Just curious. I'm probably the straightest gay guy you'd meet, and i don't care about that that much, but i'd have to take a gander :!:

It sounds great and worth it to me after reading your review :!: Thanks! :)

I'm an Ibiza veteran and have been going regularly for the last 5 years. I love Ibiza but to be honest was getting a little bored and was looking for something new. Mykanos delivered as far as I am concerned.

I'm a straight guy and had a really good time with the ladies of Mykanos. Our neighbours in our apartment block were a gay couple from Sweden who normally party in Ibiza. They loved Mykanos, and only moaned about the lack of drugs. Still they seemed to pull every night.

The gay scene in Mykanos is very segregated from the rest of the island. They tend to stick to their own bars and beaches, and at these places really go for it. Outside of the gay parts, its a very mixed friendly crowd.

The most irritating thing I've found with Ibiza over the last couple of years, is that even though there are lots of friendly people over there, the locals do seem to be a bit offish. The same cannot be said about Mykanos. Everyone is really cool. The Italian contingency tend to stick to themselves, but aprt from this I really liked it and it made a welcome change from the white isle that is Ibiza.

(ps: I am still going over for the closing parties though!)

More or less what we thought of the place.

Will definately return.

LMMFAO!!! That was funny! I love how you slipped that in at the end there Venom......

I don't blame you for going for the closing parties, wish i could!

I see what your saying though about Ibiza, i've just gotten back from my first time, i will defo go back, but there are SO many new places to see in this world. Know what i mean? So i've been wanting to do Greece anyways, and a Mykanos (and Athens) vacation next summer sounds good. I'll just have to see how it goes...hopefully i can do both next year, 1 week in each place! :)

Tip:

If you go to Athens you should go visit the island of Spetses.

You could only get there by boat when i went, but it's well worth the journey - very unspoilt and idylic and quite jetset.

;)

Mykanos

Thanks for the tip Drew.....!

They did a piece on the Olympics last night and i'm pretty sure it was this island Spetses they were talking about. Looks great! :) I'll remember that for my future trip! thanks ;)

You're welcome ;)

I managed to squeeze a weekend in Athens before I returned home. Got to visit some of the olympics: the main stadium and the beach volleyball. Great open-air clubs. Very cosmpolition, I will be visiting again later in the year.

We got in the clubs free, but the drinks prices are more than Ibiza, in the nice bars especially.

I would say it was about the same. Paid about €15 to get into a club but that included a free drink. Bar prices were about €10 for a large spirit mixer. Beautiful venues though, Ibiza is not the only place in the world with top clubs. A lot of the places I visited in Athens were on par with the outdorr bars of Miami.
