One bright summers day in August a young man boarded an Easyjet plane from London Southend with his other half. Their destination - a magical, mystical island called Ibiza. They would spend the next 5 days living in Es Cucons spending their days beaching and their nights eating. This is their story...
Actually it's not quite - I just thought that intro might be more fun than listing out where, when and how for my reviews of 2012 in Ibiza. This is the review of my fourth trip of the year - hope you enjoy!
When I started going to Ibiza I was obsessed with planning - I'd have a plan of which beaches to visit during the day, which restaurants to eat at, bars to pre-party at and club nights to dance at. As I've matured a bit, and managed to see lots more of the island, I've decided one of the most fun ways to do things on the island is the exact opposite - no planning at all!
So this last-minute trip had four key components:
- a beautiful, relaxing hotel (Es Cucons)
- a car capable of going anywhere on the island, sort of (Kia Picanto)
- a map (a proper paper one - none of this sat nav malarkey)
- two people who had visited the island many times (me & the missus)
What we did for the next 4 days was probably one of the most enjoyable trips I've ever had. Because, quite simply, we woke up every day, had a delicious breakfast, chilled out around the beautiful pool with stunning views, then jumped in the car when we got bored. We visited loads of beaches - Cala Salada, Es Cavalet, etc, went to wherever restaurant we fancied (Bambudha Grove, for example) and had a great time.
But one evening really summed things up:
We'd done our usual of breakfast at the hotel and a few hours by the pool, then jumped in the car. We picked some beaches on the map and headed off the the South West part of the island. We lounged around, drove from beach to beach and had a great day tanning, chilling and swimming. We finally decided we'd had enough, packed up our stuff and began driving back to the hotel. As the edged over the hill, we looked ahead of us, and there was San An, bathed in the golden glow of an impending sunset. Still wearing our old beach clothes and flip flops we instantly looked at each other - "shall we do sunset?".
It was completely unplanned, but we thought - "why not?". We drove down into San An, parked the car, walked down to Mambo, grabbed and drink and made our way to the decking on the rocks. As fate would have it, it was a perfect sunset as the big orange ball of light slowly sunk into the Mediterranean Sea. As we hugged each other, Tracey Chapman - Fast Car came on. I have to admit a few tears sneaked out at that moment.
The night wasn't over though, we walked back into town, grabbed a pizza from Davids (still in our swimming costumes and beach clothes) and headed back to the hotel. We ate the pizzas, had a shower and supped some cocktails underneath the stars, surrounded by the buzz of crickets. All the planning in the world couldn't have produced a day like that - pure heaven!

Best trip ever? Probably. Despite not going to a single club or planning anything, Ibiza delivered - as it tends to do!
