A learning experience

This review is certainly a late one, however, I am writing it purely for the purposes of excitement about going back this year. Was my first trip last and it really was a lesson on choosing the people you go with. So here goes....

Dates - 22nd June to 6th July 2011

Wednesday 22nd June:

Arrived on a relatively early flight, with a group of 15, and was staying at Es Pla. Immediately you will understand the large group was always going to cause problems... Now I went to Ibiza for the clubbing experience, however I was possibly the only one with this mindset. My first day consisted of watching each and every one of my mates get out their faces in our hotel by 3pm, the tone was clearly set!
The worst thing about the first night was the discovery of the Highlander. A night in the highlander started with pints of vodka & red bull and ended with some kn*bend singing loch lomond on the karaoke, not what I came for.
So each and every night this scenario played out (either in the highlander or the other favorite kilties) I will simply refer to it as a brutal night...

Thursday 23rd June:

During the day, the pattern was much the same as that on the first day, however I did take some comfort that it was Cream @ Amnesia night!

However, predictably this never materialised and yes it was another "brutal night"!

Friday 24th June:

As another day kept in line with the norm, I really was beginning to reach the end of my patience, plans for All Gone were thrown out of the window when one off my mates stated "Who even is Pete Tong?" (Now you can see what I was dealing with!!). At this stage, I was utterly depressed and proceeded to get as drunk as I was the entire holiday, hoping that tomorrow would bring a new start....

Saturday 25th June:

Thankfully, Saturday saved my Ibiza experience. A combination of comedowns and lack of sleep left most of my mates sleeping the entire day, and when they woke up vowed to get a taste of the real Ibiza! Finally...
That night I coaxed them into giving Hed Kandi a try at Es Paradis, now before that night I was not a massive soulful/deep house fan, but I have got to say it was absolutely fantastic, the setting was spot on for the brand and style of music and it made for a fantastic night. The live Sax and Drums made you feel even more part of the whole event, terrific!

Sunday 26th June:

Finally, after 4 days of trying, the previous night experience gave me a fair enough argument to persuade a few of the others to buy tickets for the rest of the holiday... The holiday was improving, still Ibiza had not made enough of an impression to force anybody into accompanying me the any Pre-Parties, but I suppose I had got my way slightly!
That night, with 8 off us having bought ticket for judgement sundays, we headed out for a quiet drink before going, as you wil have realised quiet is not a word used within my circle of mates, so quickly the night got out of hand, and only 2 of us attended, but I could not really care I was there and that was all that mattered! However, I was slightly disappointed with Judge Jules, played a little too much dubstep at the beginning of his set, not too my taste at all. But, low and behold nearing it's end some true trance classics were belted out. The whole night merely wet my appetite for more!

Monday 27th June

As everybody seemed to again be lying marooned with a comedown, I decided that I was going to the Swedish House Mafia Pre-Party at Cafe Del Mar (I think it was there cannot really remember). A really good chilled out experience watching the sunset, pity I was the only one who experienced it.
That night, with SHM sold out it was the time again fro another "brutal night", this one I could accept due to the week ahead, and I enjoyed it as best as I could.

Tuesday 28th June

Did not really find much appealing on Tuesdays last year in Ibiza, so therefore opted for a chilled out night with a few folk I had met (needed a night away from the frustration), so we sat in the Huddle Bar and got paraletically drunk!

Wednesday 29th June

The first big night I had been looking forward too, Armin Van Buuren Opening @ BE. Managed to get 3 other to join me and I've got to say Armin absolutely smashed it, the place was jam packed and bouncing from start to finish. My mates also deserted at one stage to see Fedde Le Grand, and said he played a great set! All in all this was what I came to Ibiza for, a fantastic clubbing experience, emmersed in uplifting trance!!

Thursday 30th June

After missing out on Cream the previous week this was my most eagerly anticipated night! I listened to Above & Beyond almost non-stop and their set that night at Cream did not disappoint, it was not only the best night of my holiday, but possibly the best night out of my life. Sander Van Doorn & John O'Callaghan were also incredibly good. People have often asked why I love Ibiza as much as I do after only 1 holiday, the fact they have never experienced nights like that at Cream, will mean they will never understand!

Friday 1st July

I woke up late in the afternoon (did not get in till 10am!) only to find that everybody had bought a ticket for Snoop Dogg @ Amnesia, not my scene & I refused point blank to waste my money on a night I would not enjoy! I therefore, with one other mate decided to visit Bora Bora and, after a few drinks decided that we were going to experience Pacha. To be honest my biggest regret off the holiday was getting that drunk that I could barely remember anything about Pacha and All Gone, but waking up in a bath in a random hotel room must mean I had another fantastic night!

Saturday 2nd July

Despite being on deaths door, I pulled myself together for the Hed Kandi Pre-Party (Or at least that's what I think it was) and a few vodka slushes soon sorted me out. However, I could sitll tell the constant drinking was really catching up. Despite this I attended Hed Kandi for the second time, and it really showed that the first visit was no fluke! Another fantastic night, and this time I was probably the last person to exit the club.

Sunday 3rd July

Although I had another fantastic night on the Saturday, today was really the beginning of the end for me. My body simply could not take anymore; everybody else apart from me had run out of money so I turned into a walking cash machine; and many of my mates flew home on the Sunday night. I still had a terrific Monday to look forward to so I soldiered on and reluctantly headed down the west end again. A disasterous night followed, arguments galore... And I think everybody else was ready for going home at this stage - apart from me!

Monday 4th July

By this stage my head was well and truly frazzled and memory completely hopeless, I know I went on a booze cruise but for the life of me cannot remember which one. Tiesto was also on the cards that night, and I must say he did play a relatively good set, I was pleasently surprised! But for the life of me I could not get up for it at any stage and left early, I am still gutted I done that!

Tuesday 5th July

Lay in bed almost all day, completely pennyless. I suppose running out of money is a fair reson to want to go home but I hate admitting that I actually wanted to leave Ibiza even though it was my last day.

Wednesday 6th July

Flew back home on an early flight, before leaving I was absolutely desperate to get back, but I must admit as soon as we hit the tarmac at Glasgow Airport I could have cried! Realisation that I would not be back for another year was depressing!

Despite what you probably think after reading that, this was still the best 2 weeks of my life, even if it did not go totally as I had wanted. Nights I was only confined to the west end were still OK, but I was just so frustrated! I know it could have been so much better than it was and that is why this year we won't be holding back at all! It just goes to show that sometimes, who you go on holiday with is more important than anything else...

Due to the limited exposure I had last year, anybody recommend any additional great club nights/pre-parties we should attend? Itching to do Ibiza correctly this time!

ROLL ON 25TH JULY!!!!!

This sounds strangely familar for me. And so similar to my experience in 2009... if only not quite as bad as mine, because I was only there for a week and got quite badly ill 3-4 days in.

But really can't stress enough to people about the need to share Ibiza with people who are like-minded and appreciate the side of Ibiza you want to explore. On my first trip to Ibiza in 2005 we just wandered the island, dumbstruck by everything. In 2009 I knew what I wanted to see but just wasn't able to see enough of it. Even in 2011 I only felt like I scratched the surface but it was so much more in line with the experience I wanted.

Anyway, good read, mate.

Like you say the people you go with will either make or break your entire holiday. I was maybe a day from giving up completely. I thought it being a big group it will be more versatile, but it was the opposite, it just meant more people to please.
With it being my second time this year I have a better idea of what I want to get from it, I honestly think the first time in Ibiza is llike the first time you drive a car... Before you go, you think you can do it all, and it is only when you arrive you realise it is going to be a bit more difficult to come to terms with than you thought!

Another thing, choose the length of time you go very carefully, believe me 2 weeks heavy drinking and lack of sleep is just impossible if you are at all normal!

I've always wanted to try and go for 2 weeks but the money worries of the group overall have never made it the popular choice. But I think it's just about pacing yourself. Take nights off, have late afternoon naps, don't drink loads around the pool and take the time to get fresh air and sunshine during the day etc.

One of the main differences between that clear 'beer boy' / 'clubber' divide is that the former feel like they are in constant competition with friends to show everyone what a incredible time they're having, whereas the latter appreciate that they island is the home of chilling the f*ck our as well. I didn't fully appreciate this divide existed until my ill-fated second trip in 2009.

I don't necessarily think going in a big group is a bad thing. I went with a group of 12 in 2011 but only 6 in 2009, and the larger group proved easier to deal with than the smaller one. It's all about the mix of people. It doesn't matter what they've come to Ibiza to see, as long as people are like-minded and relaxed enough. I'm going with 16 this year, and I'm not worried in the slightest. But add a couple of lads from our 2009 group and that would change the dynamic

I was on the island last year the exact dates you were almost..i was there from the 22nd till the 6th...and i must say there were a lot of good nights that entire stretch! It was my second time last year, and the opening party for BE with Armin/Fedde/SunJames+RyanMarc was amazing! I definitely agree with you that night was extremely fun all around.

Reckon you did very well to get what you did out of your first trip with a group like that. I've never been a "groupie" so to speak .. only ever one or two friends I reckon I can get along with - it's nice to have a companion or two, else often go solo too. Just find that with so many people on the island to meet if you want to there's really no need to travel with a "pack" from home... unless you want to share the cost of a big s****y villa that is. But everyone's different I guess.

It only takes one or two bl**dy whingers or twats to take the whole edge off the atmosphere for me, and send me off on a solo path ! Time on the island is too precious to waste in the wrong company :!: You only find your way through trial and error tho', and it's great you're all set to learn from the mistakes - and the successes too - and go all out for a cracker next time 8).

2 weeks of non stop rampage will do you and your wallet in for sure. I have tended to go for 2 weeks as I know I need days off to recover and also to do things other than clubbing etc.

You can always meet up with people off of here if your mates aren't cutting the mustard

I think that is the hard part, trying to balance the clubbing and the "lads holiday" aspects. And I still think that it will be hard to guage that balance for a few years more, but it will become more understandable year on year.

Even though I have detailed the lessons I learned, I think those who I went with learned even harsher lessons. Having no money with 4 days left, having to sleep with the light on at night and coming home gutted that they had not experienced more off Ibiza. That is why, since I am returning with 5 of those I was with last year, I am much more optimistic about doing some real clubbing this year. Many of them seem keener than me to start buying tickets, even as early as this! Stark difference from last year, because I think they all realised last year that Ibiza is much more than a Magalluf or Malia! And don't get me wrong I really did love it last year even with the "west end fever" invovled, but I jsut know it is going to be so much better this time around!

Oh, and with regards to the size of group as well....

I think that there is a middle ground to be found, I have been with only 3 others (albeit not in Ibiza) and with a large, large group... And both seemed to create problems. Something inbetween sounds best to, but hey everybody to their own.

The difference is some people actually never realise and never learn. A few of the lads I went with in 2009 keep going back time and time again but they never stay further a field from San An than San An Bay and I don't think have ever actually ventured beyond San Rafael.

Which is fine, if that's what you're into. And I don't hold it against them at all. But in the end all they get is an over-priced (slightly enhanced, if only for their half-hearted ventures to Privilege and the Sunset Strip) version of something you can get in so many other holiday resorts. And where's the magic there?

There's my review if you haven't already seen it : http://www.spotlight-forums.com/showthread.php?t=74039

I posted that as a bit of a warning to potential Ibiza visitors. I suspect yours was with a similar thing in mind. Not that we didn't enjoy ourselves and build some fantastic memories, it's just it hit us that we'd spent a lot of money for a watered down experience.

Been lucky with the people i've been with, but our groups have ranged from 10-25. Key is to find atleast one person who wants to do what you want and forget everyone else, it aint a lads holiday as such for me, it's all about clubbing. I'm lucky because partner and me have similar taste and don't follow the crowd. Thankfully we've been rewarded with some quality nights/dj's compared to the 'herd'.

Not sure if i'd go anywhere on my own, but that's me, just find one person and you're away

If you are going with a big group of people you gotta be prepared to do your own thing if your mates just want to get wasted at the west end etc. First time I went we kept meeting people from back home and there was eventually about 30 of us. I knew even before I went that I was never going to be going clubbing with the people I went with as they were all into trance and I'm into house and techno so nights like Cream etc have never been my cup of tea at all. It didn't matter though because you always meet different people every night.

Don't ever let someone hold you back from going somewhere you wanna go!

I second that before me & my mates stopped going on club holidays we used to argue none stop about this or that night, some wanted to get pissed some wanted to get laid and some wanted a good dance and some wanted all of that lol! It was this that got me to where I am today going solo but meeting friends where I am going, I have been doing it now for 5/6 years with no problems, I am back in the club holidays now and did 5/6 years of snowboard trips solo, I have meant so many people doing this it's amazing. Next I will be back on the board for 2 weeks in March and then to Ibiza in August, I love it :D

I think in most cases with big groups it helps to have groups within groups. They'll alway be a core that leads the way, but if people have people they can go off and do other things with it puts people under less pressure.

And from a 'lads holiday' perspective there's a big pressure to stay as one 'united pack'. There's a such a clannish, 'drinking posse' thing going on. The kind of thing you see in many town centres in this country.

I hate to have a downer on the British 'lads holiday' experience, but, hey I've had my fingers burnt. My mate's philosophy was always "you don't bring coal to Newcastle"... What can I say? It depends on the quality of the coal and what the coal is there for.

Hate to say it .. but .. as someone who grew up abroad we always used to joke about Brits having to travel in their clans or with groups of their buddies abroad. Surely one of the best things about foreign travel is breaking away from the people and stuff you know from home and experiencing something different - new people and different food/culture etc.

If you're surrounded by the familiarity of what you know there's less incentive to look outwards. Hence it's not surprising that same behaviour patterns to UK city central appear in foreign holiday resort.

My tuppence worth is ... break out, go alone or with one/two friends, and go meet new people and see something of Ibiza. It's very good for the mind, body and soul 8) !

Lots of people where I live have the same weeks holiday every year, probably from when the mills were open. People tend to holiday around certain bank holidays aswell.

Besides in the context of the thread you knew what I meant :spank:

In Ibiza you can go out on your own and you'll have new clubbing mates within an hour.

By all means go with your mates, but lay off the beers and if nobody wants to do something you do, just go off on your own.

+1

As a Scot I stay well away from the West End, Highlander and anything associated with Inside Out (my Glasgow night is Pressure).. Ibiza really is about leaving Glasgow behind.

I only ever stay in Playa d'en Bossa and go to Space (We Love-Sunday/Cox-Tuesday), DC10 (Circo-Loco/Monday), Pacha any night (so the girls can get dressed), Amnesia (closing only or perhaps Cocoon).

It's nice to have a few girls in the group.

Everyone I meet has the potential of being a new friend, no matter where they are from in the world...

I never take any serious football talk to Ibiza.. No 1888 or 1873 if you know what I mean..

Connell, give those a try mate and hopefully you'll enjoy a better Ibiza experience :)

Enjoy your trip :)
