corresponding to my much earlier posted season preview, here's now finally my mid-season review...
2008 Mid-season report
We’re exactly one week to go till August begins! After a quiet june, july has already been much busier (and thus better) and now the island is really getting full again. The clubs are rammed to the rafters for the best nights, the sunset strip is very busy when that red fire ball takes a dive into the sea after another hot day, restaurant reservations need to be done again…welcome high season!!!
Weather had been bad in May, much rain, got better for the openings, and since mid june it’s been just GREAT! This years music is really good as well, in my opinion it’s a well-balanced mix of “obvious stuff” (the funkier side of house as well as trance, which both this year don’t sound that cheesy to me as in earlier years) and “underground stuff”, speaking of more techy, deep or minimal sounds.
Just before the absolute peak arrives (BBC Radio1 is on already next week!), let’s have a look at how all the nights have been doing so far. What I am giving you now is an overview how busy the nights are RIGHT NOW, at the end of July. Either I have been visiting them during the last few days, or friends have, or I have been talking to people working for those clubs/nights. To make things easy, there are four different levels:
weak – when the club’s really not busy
So-so – when there are peeps on the dancefloor, but not really enough to have a nice atmosphere
Nice – busy, great atmosphere, bit room to dance. The perfect level if you don’t like it rammed
Full – rammed…packed…tin of sardines!
KEEP IN MIND LEVELS CAN AND PROBABLY WILL CHANGE IN AUGUST, MEANING A NIGHT WHICH IS “SO-SO” NOW MIGHT BE “NICE” IN AUGUST!

Space
Monday – Monday’s Calling
Weak – Mondays are just not for space, even when dc10 is shut!
Tuesday – Carl Cox
Full – Coxy pulls the crowds
Wednesday – La Troya
Full – especially now with the Italians arriving!
Thursday – Be@space (Danny Tenaglia)
Nice – had a weak start, but is OK now!
Friday – Goa
So-so – good line-ups, huge competition on a Friday!
Saturday – Matinée
Nice - make sure you’re there at bang on 6pm to enjoy the best part of it!
Sunday – We Love Space
Full – WLS still rules Sundays
Privilege
Monday – Tiesto
Full - Contrary to some pessimistic predictions of some people, the dutch guy fills Privilege every single Monday
Tuesday – closed
(probably open in August though, rumours around…)
Wednesday – Meganite
So-so – not as strong as last year, but will be surely a “nice” in August!
Thursday – Monza
Nice – might also get a “full” in August!
Friday – SupermartXé
Full – the surprise of the season. Although I’m sure it’s mainly so busy because hardly anyone pays to get in there…
Saturday – La Comunidad CANCELLED
Weak – now “soldiers” will be taking over, let’s see if they make more people invade Privi on a Saturday!
Sunday – Xtravaganza
So-so – only started a few weeks ago and is still building.
Amnesia
Monday – Cocoon
Full. Just full!
Tuesday – Armada (Main Room) / Contact (Terrace)
Armada – full, Contact – nice. Armin pulls the crowds and it’s just a great night! Contact wasn’t too busy first, but is really nice now – have a look at the décor!
Wednesday – Espuma/Foam Party (Main Room) / Made in Italy (Terrace)
Espuma – full, Made in Italy – nice. As contact (see above), the Terrace for Made in Italy needed some weeks to get going.
Thursday – Cream
Full!
Friday – Manumission
Full by now – Manu had a bit of a difficult start this year, but is back on form now.
Saturday – People from Ibiza
Full – and no one would think it is that busy! OK, the terrace isn’t always rammed to the rafters, but still, it is a very busy night at Amnesia
Sunday – Espuma/Foam Party (Main Room) / Juicy (Terrace)
Espuma – full again, Juicy – nice!
Pacha
Monday – Release Yourself
Nice – maybe suffering a bit from the “San Rafael effect” (i.e. Tiesto and Cocoon)?`
Tuesday – Defected in the House
Nice – very nice
Wednesday – Subliminal Sessions
Full – Erick in the House
Thursday – F*** Me I’m Famous
Full – there’s not even space to F***!!!!
Friday – Pure Pacha
Full – not even suffering a little bit not having Tong on the line up anymore!
Saturday – Def Mix
Full – it’s Saturday and Def Mix is around for years!

Fetish/Pacha Classics – nice
Flower Power – full!

Monday – Mn2s
Nice – had a difficult start (“San Rafael effect” again), but is doing well now.
Tuesday – Salvacion
Nice – and popular with Italians, so might be even busier in August
Wednesday – Yxaiio Night
So-so – newcomer night, give it a go!
Thursday – Kinky Malinky / Kidology
So-so – will be a “nice” in August I guess
Friday – Miss Moneypenny’s
So-so – many things going on on Friday, but also this one will prob be a “nice” from now on
Saturday – Hed Kandi
Full – do two HK’s a week and El Divino is packed twice a week!
Sunday – Louie Vega and friends
Nice – “..and friends” – unannounced, both E-Morillo and Rog Sanchez already played guest sets at this one!
Eden
Monday – Koolwaters
???? – anyone been? I’d guess a “so-so”
Tuesday – Advanced/Tidy
Nice as far as I know!
Wednesday – Garlands
Nice

And here’s some more stuff….
Gala Night (the “Zoo”) – the Zoo Project is surely having their best year so far!!! Having some wicked guest DJ’s this summer, together with their residents, and the whole fiesta is improved to last year, now including BBQ possibilities for example!
Ibiza Rocks – I am not into that stuff while I’m on the island but they’re having a big success and I’m hearing also their afterparties are good. And there are also wicked parties at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, with Discobomb for example!
DC10 – let’s hope they re-open on August 18!
Conclusion: I can safely say that, also with the new opening hours, I am still having a brilliant season so far. The music is great, the nightlife is as good as ever, the island is as beautiful as ever and again, I already have met LOADS of spotlighters while we were shaking our butts on some dancefloors…and that’s exactly where I will meet more of you guys during the next two months!
