Castlemorton’s 18th Anniversary

Britain’s most infamous free festival at Castlemorton Common took place eighteen years ago this weekend (May 21st) provoking a massive police crackdown against raves which eventually led to both the Criminal Justice Act and the emergence of today’s all night club culture in the UK.

Ironically the location was inadvertently chosen by cops who directed 10 Sound systems including Spiral Tribe, Bedlam, Circus Warp, Circus Normal and DiY to the common on May 20 1992, after shutting down the annual Avon Festival. With weather conditions absolutely perfect for outdoor partying (hot and sunny by day and crisp and pleasant by night) thousands congregated with numbers growing even faster when the BBC opened their TV news bulletins with footage from the event on Friday evening.

An estimated 40,000 revellers attended Castlemorton over four glorious days and nights with most typically inner city ravers living for the weekend or ‘new age travellers’, predominantly young alternative people who’d quit urban squats for life on the road. Though scores of cops prowled outside the festival’s loose perimeter of trucks and tents, virtually non ventured on site, leaving the Common to become a genuine temporary autonomous zone that remained safe and virtually crime free throughout the long weekend.

As Britain’s tabloid ‘yellow’ press demanded ‘something must be done’ to stop free parties, Castlemorton reveller ‘Richard’ explained their popularity and ability to provoke fear within the establishment.

"There is nothing wrong with what we are doing. We are here to have fun in the sun. We chose to live this way and reject the hassles associated with a conventional way of life,” he told the Daily Express.

“Some say we are dirty, but we are environmentally conscious, we make efforts not to dump rubbish. People generally have it in for us because of our lifestyle. I think many envy us because of our freedom.”

Acid techno legend Henry Cullen (aka D.A.V.E. the Drummer) had also left London some years before to live in a van though when the Festival happened was already building a name for himself as a drummer with ska/ punk/ dub band Back To The Planet.

“We were playing on Wango Riley's travelling stage which was made from a huge removal lorry with one side that folded out to become a stage. I think the sound was by Aardvark or maybe Bushfire and it was a great rig to play on with pretty good lights too, it was a proper rock and roll stage,” he recalled.

“Of course we were surrounded by these stupid ravers from the city in flash cars (I was used to dreadlocks and old buses back then),” he chuckled, “And all these sound systems with DJs all playing the same record over and over again but I didn't care. I was young, free and a total hippy. I loved everyone (twice),” he laughed.

“I remember seeing one policeman on his own at the entrance when we arrived in our truck: we waved at him on the way in.”

“After we played at night, we had to wait for two people to finish ****ing in the middle of the lane before we could get off site,” Henry continued.

“So the entire band, including our female singer ‘Fil’, sat in the front of the band van and watched these two going at it like rabbits with me flashing my lights and beeping the horn and shouting ‘get out the ****ing way!’ out of the window They didn't move until it was all over. Scattered throughout the net were islands, remote hideouts where ships could be watered and provisioned, booty traded for luxuries and necessities. Some of these islands supported "intentional communities," whole mini-societies living consciously outside the law and determined to keep it up, even if only for a short but merry life . . .’)

Nice read.

Seemed really ironic, immediately following your post, Robder. There is a garish advert for Pacha Ibiza:eek:

Love4Life summer soundsystem

This summer sees the return of the AWA party crew. After a year out searching for the perfect venue, determined to put the fun back into partying, their new event “love4life” will be a weekender, 20th-22nd of August, at Crasken Eco Centre, Helston, Cornwall, a fantastic converted farm, with renovated barns to party in, and camping on site. These parties were originally an invite only, outdoor gathering, where veteran dj’s of the acid house scene leave their usual set at home, and look towards the back of their record collections. As ever, the event will be a retro vinyl affair, offering a journey into the highlights of house music from the ‘80s and ‘90s, its influences, and acid house, trance, and techno of the ‘90s underground party movement. Celebrating love, life, spine tingling tunes, and the acid house counter culture that inspired people all over the world to smile and dance together.

For the main event on Saturday, free party pioneers DiY Soundsystem will be bringing the original Black Box rig and a full crew, inc Digs and Woosh, Jack and Simon DK, with support from Jonno and Tommo (ornate music) and Debbs (babble).
Formed back in the heady days of ‘89, in Nottingham, initially throwing house parties, before moving on to throw their first event at The Garage, home to a fledgling Graeme Park, in November of that year.
They went on to take decks and records to Glastonbury ‘90, meeting up with some like minded travellers to forge an inspired liaison that led to the start of the UK free party scene.
From Castle Morton to the Café del Mar, DiY extended their punk ethos into a veritable empire of record label, recording studio, production, club nights, and outdoor parties, with the sound system receiving international underground acclaim. Although becoming deeply involved in a new movement combining protest with pleasure, DiY themselves remained enigmatic, always avoiding simple categorization and demanding that the collective ethos that underlay their philosophy was not sacrificed to the temptation of momentary fame; perhaps the most satisfaction was gained by DiY when ‘In the City 97’ described them as ‘culturally, the most dangerous people in the UK.”.
DiY Discs, their record label, launched in ‘90, with the first LP ‘Strictly 4 Groovers’ licensed to WARP and selling 20000 copies. Remixes by DJ Pierre, Charles Webster, and a young Phil Asher all featured, as did debuts from Atjazz, Nail (Bent) and contributions from Groove Armada’s Andy Cato, himself cutting his teeth at the free parties of the early ‘90s. The imprint currently numbers over 100 releases, with tracks from the crew and some collected on their travels.
These trips abroad took them to Dallas for the legendary Hazy Daze ranch parties, as well as Canada, Sydney, New Zealand, Tokyo, Thailand and as much of Europe as had discovered the deep house groove. Ibiza beckoned in ‘90, invited by Jose Padilla & playing with A Man Called Adam during appearances at Amnesia, Space Terrace & Pacha throughout the ‘90s. Back in the UK, a now infamous coach trip to the Hacienda ended with the whole posse ejected for having too much fun, and a wan Tony Wilson stating ‘we never overrule our bouncers’. 2010 marks 21 years of this legendary outfit and their mission to bring the house music of the clubs to the fields and the freedom of the fields to the clubs.

Headlining on the second rig, representing the tek end of the old skool party scene, is our regular guest, and acid techno legend, Chris liberator, from the Stay Up Forever collective. Always well received, and with a wealth of releases under his belt, his unique sets are in worldwide demand, and guaranteed to hit the spot. Chris will be joined by Sikaflex and Je:5, now key members of international cutting edge techno outfit Ugly Funk, having previously cut their teeth on the infamous BWPT sound system in the ‘90s, throwing regular and rowdy free techno parties across the midlands countryside and city warehouses. Local support from underground stalwarts Simon Spacecase, Jinal (lush), and RDT ensure that the Southwest scene is well represented also.

Back by popular demand, to host the third system, after rocking the last AWA party at the Koola in June ’08, are the oldskoolanthemz.com crew (the biggest and most active old skool site on the net with over 10000 members) They will be bringing a bunch of talented djs joined byCass-Roc(Krush)tbc, and locals, Evil Genius and Dec T, and a huge stack of oldskool vinyl covering Club classics and 80s-90s house styles, oldskool hip hop, breaks, electro and beyond.
