I'm kind of embarassed to admit this, but I should've made the connection before (especially considering the line of work I'm in and am considered to be a bit of an expert on epilepsy in my workplace).
The kid who died suffered from epilepsy. Now, epilepsy usually affects the brain-stem but if the kid had 'generalised' epileptic activity in his brain, particularly if it was poorly controlled then the chances are it would also affect his temporal lobe (the area of the brain thought to be responsible for behaviour). This seems to be bourne out by his mother claiming "He had a bit of a temper". Temporal lobe activity can make people's behaviour seem erratic to say the least, and often to extremes. "He was just doing it to show off". Ring any bells? Add to that, the most usual way in this country these days for controlling epilepsy is a drug called Sodium Valporate which inhibits the production of seratonin in the brain (which would have meant that he would have felt that his pills weren't working or at least not to the expected degree), and there you have it- a recipe for total disaster. I can't believe I didn't click sooner.
OH MY GOD!!!! How is this guy still alive? His brain must be permanently frazzled! It takes me a while to get over a heavy weekend, and that's probably 1% of what he does!
