san antonio's local police ordered last night the closure of all these venues due to the risk of collapse of the building (the flats above were already empty), which will be demolished in october and rebuilt. the people that rent the bars are obviously very upset as they spent lots of money employing people for this season...

(the island cafe is also affected but that one has actually been closed for a long while)

the good news is that the nautical club opposite is now open and has a lovely decked terrace overlooking the harbour. shame that the little chiringuito it was using for the duration of the rebuilding is now closed.

i know! :(

in the note they have on the door they say they'll be back soon, there or somewhere else!

i reckon once they rebuild it the rent they'll have to pay will be much higher so i doubt very much any of these bars will open again in the same location...

The new Yacht Club was inaugurated last week after works, which began at the beginning of 2009, were finally completed. The most complex part of the project was to pile the foundations on the seabed before creating a spacious building which boasts two magnificent terraces overhanging the water. The opening was attended by the President of the Consell, Vicent Serra, and many other dignitaries from around the Island. José Tur, the President of the Club and one of its founders, said that his members were interested in improving the image of the town and commented proudly that the installations could be compared favourably with the best in the Mediterranean. There is now a restaurant, Es Nàutic, a cafeteria, a lounge, offices and a conference room; there are 578 moorings, six fuel pumps, a wifi area, shower and toilet facilities all of which are supervised all day and night. The Club first opened in 1973 with the original idea to have just a few spaces to moor and room to practice water sports, but from humble beginnings it has now grown.
However, near this attractive new construction, a walk near the harbour and a drink and a bite to eat will, for the time being at least, prove a little more difficult, as the Town Hall has ordered all the businesses situated directly opposite the Yacht Club to close, as it maintains that there is an entire building in danger of collapsing. It may be remembered that one of the second floor balconies fell through the kitchen of one of the establishments last year; fortunately the restaurant concerned, The Island Café, was not open to the public at the time. The other four businesses involved, Stephan, Pussycat, Bel Sito and Rita's Cantina, were all ordered to close as from the beginning of last week, as recent inspections carried out by experts reported that the building had deteriorated considerably over the past few months.
The Town Planning Officer, José Torres, said that if the bars and restaurants involved could come up with a viable proposition to shore up the building, which met with the approval of Town Hall technicians, then it would be possible for them to continue trading this summer, but it would be the proprietor who would have to foot the bill; all five are rented properties. Whatever happens in the next few months, in October the whole building is to be demolished and planning permission will be given for construction to begin immediately, in order to be completed by the beginning of the next summer season.
The proprietors of these businesses have expressed their discontent that the Town Hall has waited until now to make the decision, when all have already contracted staff to work for the season, but Torres replied that the lamentable state of the structure was known by everyone and that they should not be surprised that the authorities need to take precautions to avoid an accident in this very busy area of the seafront. The other business close by, S'Avaradero, is not affected by this edict, but the owners will have to present a plan to ensure the security of their customers while the reconstruction work is being carried out. The rooms which were above these establishments were evacuated some time ago, as they had been taken over by squatters and were in a very dilapidated condition.
The proprietor of Rita's Cantina, María Knihj, reported later in the week that she and her neighbours were preparing a dossier to ensure that the building would be safe for the summer, but added, “If the structure is in such a bad state, then surely the authorities should have closed the road which runs immediately behind it, (the el Faro), because it is always full of people”. The nine people employed in her bar are now enjoying a forced holiday, probably until this Saturday, the 1st, but beforehand they generously distributed all the perishable food which could not be used to needy people in the town.

The Town Hall has granted a licence to the proprietors of the restaurants and bars which had been temporarily closed down due to the danger of the building collapsing. Having studied the plans drawn up by an architect, the Town Planning Councillor, José Torres, reported that everything was in order and work could commence immediately on the establishments in front of Club Nautico. Once it has been completed, the Local Police will remove the barriers and the businesses will be allowed to re-open. Torres reminded the proprietors that they will have to close on the 30th of September, as on the 15th of October (when construction work may recommence, having been halted for the summer) the whole complex will be demolished
María Knijn the proprietor of Rita's Cantina, one of the bars affected, is still asking why the authorities waited until now to close them down and not last November when a balcony fell on the terrace of the Island Café, but said that she was grateful that the Town Hall had acted so quickly in approving the plans to prop up the vulnerable sections. She went on to say, “My bar is always busy; we open at 7.30 in the morning and close at 1.00 am, all year round. We attract a great deal of customers from the Island as well as tourists during the summer months”. By the time this edition of the Ibiza Sun hits the streets, these businesses could well be thronging with customers once more.

Good to hear she is moving further up the road to where the roundabout is beside the ferry port for the next two years whilst they pull down the existing building.

Anyone know what is happening to Pussycat?

Dunno but they were advertising that all the fittings from the bar are up for sale just last week, stools, benches, tables, toldos, everything basically.

You know what I remembered last night that about 7 or 8 years ago I went to an after party in one of the flats above. Rank wasn't the word. Hoards of cockroaches outside. Not surprised they are falling down now.

By the time that this edition of the Ibiza Sun reaches the streets, three bars along the seafront, Pussycat, Stephan and Rita’s Cantina, will have closed their doors for the season. A demolition order was issued on the whole building earlier in the year, as it was deemed unsafe, but the proprietors of the three businesses paid for the structure to be reinforced so that they could continue to open during the summer, but now the order will be carried out. Once the premises have been vacated completely, the mains electricity and water supplies will be disconnected and the bulldozers will move in, as soon as the whole area has been cordoned off. The Planning Officer, José Torres, said that the businesses concerned are interested in the work being carried out as swiftly as possible so that the new building will be completed before the beginning of the next summer season. The proprietor of Rita’s Cantina has already announced that the popular spot will be opening shortly in a different location further along the street
