IBIZA RECOVERED - IBIZA ROCKS TAKES SAN ANTONIO
ON THE ROCK & ROLL ROAD TO RECOVERY!

WITH DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, EDITORS, WE ARE SCIENTISTS,
BOY KILL BOY, THE STREETS (SOUNDSYSTEM), ZANE LOWE,
EDDY TEMPLE MORRIS PLUS MANY MORE

‘No longer can we look to Ibiza with the judgemental rectitude of an indie elite...Ibiza is ours now! Let the colonisation commence! (NME)

Last year, Ibiza Rocks launched with an almighty bang; rock bands invaded Ibiza, boundaries were blurred, perceptions were challenged and history was made! Due to the overwhelming success of Ibiza Rocks 2005, a further, more extensive summer season of unique live gigs will take place in Ibiza from July to September 2006, courtesy of Manumission in association Sony Ericsson and will transmit on Channel 4.

Not content with mixing it up in Ibiza’s club land, Manumission and Sony Ericsson are taking things one step further this year and will take the bands out of the club and onto the beach! With Zane Lowe (Radio 1/MTV2), Eddy Temple Morris (XFM) and bands such as Dirty Pretty Things, Editors, We Are Scientists, Boy Kill Boy and The Streets (Soundsystem) all set to perform on the golden sands of San Antonio at Manumission’s Bar M this summer, Ibiza may finally be getting the hangover cure it’s been crying out for! Bar M has been converted into a fully equipped live outdoor venue and looks set to become the genre defining venue of ‘noughties’ Ibiza.

After 11 years of genre-defining dance music, Manumission decided to add a new string to it’s bow by welcoming live rock bands onto the island of dance last summer. This was a risky move, but one that Sony Ericsson had the forethought to be part of and Ibiza Rocks was born. Ibiza Rocks mixed up the best of the Ibiza dance music scene with cutting edge live music from some of the best new bands around including Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, Babyshambles, Futureheads, The Kooks and Maximo Park. This was an alien concept for Ibiza and dance music fans worldwide, but since this unlikely love affair between rock and dance in Ibiza began, there’s been no stopping it!

Zane Lowe (Radio1/MTV 2) said: ‘Last year we proved Ibiza rocks. We had an amazing summer with Maximo Park, Hard Fi, The Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs, Audio Bullys and Kooks who all went home and spread the word. As a result, this summers line-up is super exciting and I can't wait to get back to the island.’

Promoter Andy McKay of Manumission said: ‘A lot of people were sceptical when we launched Ibiza Rocks last year, but now it couldn’t be more different! We recognised the sheer thirst for live music in Ibiza and we were the first to introduce band culture into club culture. The success has proven that we can forget club culture rules and let rock lead the way in its own right in Ibiza. This year the emphasis will be more on stand alone Ibiza Rocks gigs in our bar, Bar M at 9 or 10pm in the evening, making the best new live music even more accessible!

Ben Padley, UK Marketing Director at Sony Ericsson, said: "Everyone at Sony Ericsson is very excited about teaming up once again with Manumission for Ibiza Rocks. The event sits well with our Walkman family of phones and provides the perfect platform to introduce our new W810i Walkman phone into the fold. Like Ibiza Rocks, our Walkman phones are considered by many to be pioneering and provide a new and exciting experience in music."

In another exciting development, Manumission has signed their first deal with Channel 4, who will broadcast five half hour Ibiza Rocks programmes, culminating in a one hour special as part of their 4 music strand and stand alone performances from the events will also be broadcast on T4.

Dominic Anciano directs the series, which will be co-produced by 1010 productions and Ibiza Rocks TV. Ibiza Rocks TV will be portraying a familiar island and familiar bands in a very unfamiliar, thought provoking way! Forget the days of Ibiza Uncovered and witness a revolution in music broadcasting as Ibiza Rocks hits Channel 4, following the featured bands/DJ’s and Ibiza Rocks promoters Dawn and Andy McKay and their extended Manumission family and friends on the rock & roll road to Ibiza’s big recovery!

Cath Lovesey, Editor T4 Youth & Music, Channel 4 said: “After the huge success of last year's event, we're delighted to be on board bringing Ibiza Rocks to Channel 4 viewers in an exciting and innovative way that befits what will no doubt be one of the hottest events of the year.”

Ibiza Rocks will be spreading its new manifesto of change across the UK in a series of events that are designed to further export the message that Ibiza is not what you expected. Zane Lowe and Eddie Temple Morris will be hosting the Ibiza Rocks UK Tour in various cities, showcasing the best in new music with Professor Green and Young Knives all with a special Manumission twist!

Ex-musical partner of Pete Doherty, Carl Barrat, will bring his band Dirty Pretty Things to Bar M too according to Gigwise. No date announced yet.

Editors, Boy Kill Boy, We Are Scientists and Dirty Pretty Things have all been confirmed for Ibiza Rocks this summer.
All the bands will play Bar M run by the superclub Manumission in San Antonio in July. Zane Lowe and Eddy Temple-Morris will be manning the decks on various dates too.
The bands follow the likes of Kaiser Chiefs and Babyshambles who played Ibiza Rocks in its first year last summer.
More acts are expected to be announced for the rest of the season very soon.

Spotlight 3 Sentence Review

The crowd reaction was the most intense of the summer so far, tho the songs were arguably the least catchy. The hookiest tune was the penultimate one - it has been suggested 'Bang Bang You're Dead' is about lead singer Carl Barat's former band mate Pete Doherty who has just cancelled the the scheduled Baby shambles appearance at the same venue next week due to rehab committments.

Manumission boss Andy McKay says Pete will be back, hopefully to be reunited with Carl for a Rockaoke sing-along!

Spotlight 3 Sentence Review

Mike Skinner and friends started well with invocations to all preset to "'ave it cos we're on 'oliday" and the distribution of hard liquor to those in the front row. However once beyond the reworking of the Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good On the Dance Floor' and other gusts of zeitgeisty genius the ideas seemed to run out. There's a germ of a great sound in this system but perhaps it could do with a bit more time on the road.

Indie invasion has rock fans raving about Ibiza

By Elisa Bray

Published: 24 July 2006

With long days lazing on the beach, and even longer nights dancing in its pounding nightclubs, Ibiza became a rite of passage to three generations of hedonistic clubbers, ravers and acid house freaks. But as the dominance of dance music wanes, the White Island has completed its reinvention as the new capital of a different type of music.
A combination of the absence of this year's Glastonbury Festival and the low-budget airline boom has allowed the island to enjoy a golden summer by luring the previously Ibiza-wary, festival-loving Indie kids.
Bands playing this year include Dirty Pretty Things, Editors and Kasabian. They were to be joined by Pete Doherty and Babyshambles until the English courts ordered the 27-year-old singer back into rehabilitation.
Observers believe the new British clientele has established Ibiza at the heart of Europe's summer music scene. Andy McKay, who is staging the second "Ibiza Rocks" festival this year at the superclub Manumission, said: "There's been a massive shift in the UK youth culture. This is Ibiza responding to what is the youth phenomenon. The most successful culture - Madchester, raves and dance music - has been superseded by guitar music."
The focus of the Indie revolution is Ibiza Rocks, which attracted thousands in its opening week. It represents the growing dominance of guitar bands. The festival began last year, with Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles, Maximo Park and Hard-Fi being its first performers.
This year's events will be broadcast on Radio 1 and Channel 4 whose six-week series showcasing the summer gigs starts at the end of August. Radio One's Zane Lowe will broadcast from Kasabian's set next month when they are supported by up-and-coming "new rave" electro band The Klaxons.
Sam Stag, 25, said: "I went to Ibiza last year and I'm going this summer. It seems a really good idea to check it out, especially as Glastonbury isn't happening this year."
When he started booking bands four years ago, Andy McKay, whose 10,000-capacity Manumission is Europe's largest, was met with derision from band promoters. He said: "I'd get through to the agents and the response was absolute laughter. It took a while to persuade people. It got to the point where the English were leading a musical trend and so they were losing interest in Ibiza."
He added: "Ibiza Rocks was quite a provocative title out here because rock music and Ibiza were like chalk and cheese. It met a lot of resentment from most people on the island. Now we're finding 85 per cent of people are taking the idea of indie rock in Ibiza."
The very first Ibiza Rocks gig with the Kaiser Chiefs was the first event on the island Andy McKay recalls selling out in advance for 13 years. The second act he witnessed selling out in advance was We are Scientists, who opened Ibiza Rocks last week.
Mr McKay said: "I do feel UK perception of Ibiza has changed in a positive way. My analogy is Ibiza has now got a vegetarian option."
From the Sixties onwards the island has gone through several reinventions. Step-hen Armstrong, author of The White Island: The Extraordinary History of the Mediterranean's Capital of Hedonism, described how in the Sixties and early Seventies it began as a hippy hangout, popular with gay celebrities who were afraid to come out in the UK. Freddy Mercury staged his most extravagant birthday party there in 1983, before it switched to the New Romantic movement of the Eighties. Then came the arrival of ecstasy and house music in the mid-Eighties.
Ibiza Rocks has opened the door to a new music scene. The new music night Rogue Indie takes place on Sundays; the Southern Comfort Fat Tuesday party, featuring the leftfield DJs Coldcut and Rob da Bank and combining interactive theatre, made its debut in June and will move back into the British festival sphere at Bestival in September.
