reopening
The lights again Montesol Ibiza
The iconic hotel located in Vara de Rey reopens after year and half closed, now a five-star hotel

Since December 2014, the legendary hotel had remained without visitors. Now reopens its doors converted into a five-star hotel with all the character of yesteryear and in which the cuisine has more weight than ever. The hotel manager believes that the  proposed pedestrianization of Vara de Rey  could give "more public".

After more than year and a half closed and bolted, the iconic wooden windows Montesol open again to Vara de Rey and port. Its ocher walls will house new stories will join it for more than eighty years had the hotel as a common denominator. Stories that had characters like starring Orson Welles, Caroline of Monaco, the Pink Floyd group or General Franco himself, among others. Characters and stories that are also part of this new Montesol through photographs occupying the walls of the stairs and corridors, taken from the file of the City.

And the hotel did not want to be a five star to use, but has sought to respect the essence that characterized the old Montesol, now giving it great importance to the kitchen. "It Montesol coffee rooms, not the opposite," she says from her kitchen chef Basque Josetxo Arrieta. "Here we will work with indigenous product, we want to maintain the essence of traditional hotel, but updated" he adds.

The importance of maintaining identity is a mantra that has permeated the entire team. "We are a symbol and we must respond as such ', reiterates Lucas Kelm, manager of cocktails, who from behind his bar also mentions identification with the island as one of the keys" found on the island the basis for creating our products, and everything is fresh here. "

Symbol of Ibiza
The building, emblem of the work of Joan Gómez Ripoll, mestre Campos, was opened in 1933 and had been reformed since last February. Now it will be managed by ADH, the Avintia group, whose leaders have seen their first guests arrived during the day yesterday. Eduardo Miquel, hotel manager, shakes hands with each person through the gates of Montesol with a perennial smile on his face. "It is a site that keeps it classic, but also fun", he explains.

"If we do not catch us would have sunk," explains Carlos Berrozpe, general manager of ADH and washing the face Montesol in recent months. "We want to break the barrier of five stars, people between fearless, coffee Montesol is for all Ibizan" adds Berrozpe.

The appearance of the bar and the terrace seem to agree. Families eating, snack young couples, older ladies chatting while sipping a Martini. "It is important that people recognize this site as the place to come for a drink. To identify with him, "says director of ADH.

Despite not give data on the investment, disbursement is evident when you enter any of the rooms. "This is where you have to notice the five stars, not price. Everything is new and top quality ", says the manager," except the shutters. The wooden shutters are lifelong, which have always been at the Montesol "adds Berrozpe with a smile.

That care with conscious legacy reaches another level when Berrozpe and Miquel, visible leaders of this whole project, talk about what they have already proposed to the City Council. "When it opened the Montesol was a small kiosk at the door," he begins one of them, "beautiful with classic marquees" continue, "we have proposed to the City Council that we take care of the cost to do it again, they we just have to give permission "have a smile on his face.

Another detail that also appeal to the nostalgic is that, despite not having yet set date for them has been agreed with Pacha and photographer Toni Riera to be retaking those mythical advertising snapshots of the disco so famous they did in the seventies.

A common project
Both the hotel manager and the director of the Management detail count as a feature that is rarely found at these levels. "Each of the hotel staff is a partner of the same" begins Berrozpe, "know the budget and participate in the operation," he continues, "so part of the hotel, and if the hotel works, they receive benefits," concludes the director General ADH, the company specializing in the management and operation of hotels Avintia group.

The Ibiza is not the first historic hotel saving abandonment, and promises to be the last as they have projects for half Spain. "It is our philosophy, we are here to stay," he concludes.

Also it announces that during the winter months in the hotel out activities related to gastronomy and culture, activities that will have personalities of the island will be.

The rehabilitation of this building, so tied to Vila and its inhabitants, has recovered not only construction but a piece of the history of the white island, after years of despondency.

The façade of the few jewels that still keep the aura of the classic Ibiza gets the proper place. White balconies regain the life of yesteryear and do justice to its creator, mestre Campos, who after designing his work, only could enjoy a few years before he was shot at the end of the Civil War.

Ibiza City Council is studying the legality of the closure of the arches of the Grand Hotel Montesol with curtains and large pots, preventing the passage of pedestrians below as a traditional arcade era.

The Consistory have reported being reviewed Public Way Ordinance because it seems that the system "is not correct", but noted that first decision will be communicated to affected business.

The pots and curtains installed in three of the arches prevent the passage as under the arcade have been installed tables and chairs which would be part of the hotel cafe.

The establishment also reinstalled the lights, although that had withdrawn the day of his inauguration, after the City Council technicians Vila, who studied their suitability, communicate that violated the financial rules of PEPRI (Special Plan Protection and Interior Reform).

The colonial building, Ibiza's first hotel opened in 1933, it is governed by the financial regulations of the municipality, which does not allow certain elements on the facades.

In this case, the rules of PEPRI, does not indicate the type of lighting that should have the building "but specifies that the light source should not be seen directly," according to municipal sources.

In addition, the renovated five-star hotel is declared of Cultural Interest (BIC).
