Yo

Some of you may remember www.connectedup.co.uk which provided a free service for mix hosting etc etc a couple of years ago.

Anyway, due to unforeseen circumstances the site had to close.......BUT.....it is now open again!

The mix sharing system is based upon the bit torrent protocol.

You'll be able to uload a mix via the web browser, then have it automatically seeded via the bit torrent tracker. This doen't mean slow downloads either, but nice phull phat ones!

Another nice feature that's new is the remix engine.. where users ca collaboratively share samples, ideas, loops... LIVE CLIPS!!! etc.. etc..

Also they'll (eventually) be a net label released under the creative commons license

Plus we've got LOTS of disk space

Come back along and sign up, if you want a mix hosted (that will be able to be downloaded at top speeds) then follow the instructions

hi chewie 8)

its taken a while but its back and its going to be a LOT better

morbyd - wha??
Chewie circulates mixes and we're all waiting with baited breath for Mix #12. Perhaps the ease of circulation (he used to mail CDs) will encourage completion of the next installment!

seems a bit strange to use BT for this kind of distribution. Am i right in thinking you host the files on your server for the torrent, but your hoping people will download the mix and leave it to upload too? I dont think this will work in practice, more that it will just use up your bandwidth as usual but less people will download because its not as user friendly as http.

Alot of people download this kinda thing at work and BT makes it far less viable.

Yep, I mainly listen to mixes at work, and BT is blocked by our firewall.

Nice looking site though and I like the remix idea :)

cheers timo :)

I know how much hosting costs so i can understand this choice to opt for BT. If you're not tied into a long contract in the UK, you can always try hosting in DE. Speed is v good and the prices are even better. I've got two from www.server4you.de

The prob with that site is that its german. There is a US one but that means US connection and US prices so not worth it. You can email em in english though so not a prob. The prices for dedicated servers are prob the best in the EU. If u find cheaper let me know!

thanks for link. I dont have the time to sign up at the moment but in reply to this:
We use bit torrent to ensure that the files aren't leeched by users putting in the URL straght into their browser.

Plus it makes the service fairer to use, especially if it's free!! When we're sharing 200Gb+ of files then you can image that's a hell of a lot of bandwidth (therefore money) needed to share those mixes.

Sites that offer HTTP upload and download facilities are generally filled to the brim with uploads and are excruciatingly slow (400Mb at 5Kb/s??! I ditched my modem years ago!! megaupload cough cough)

Also, if torrenting doesn't work, why the HELL is it used so much for large files?

Finally, people at work shouldn't be downloading mixes!

BT is often used for large files where there is a large demand. This is why its so popular for distrubuting movies etc because there's substantial amount of people who want it. This obviously continues the flow of supply as they upload as they download (the whole purpose of this distro method). However, I feel mixes such as these will have a low demand (relatively) as not only will they be from lesser known artists/DJ's but the fact these are a more 'underground' genre (both musically and medium) lessons the target audience dramatically. This in turn affects the effectiveness of distribution. I think the only people that will bother seeding are the main members/friends of the site and you can only effectively seed a few mixes from a UK BB connection even if you had enough numbers. The fact is that torrenting does work but only where there is a high demand for the content.

I think torrents will limit your userbase due to the above and also because a lot of clubbers are not even remotely technically minded. To alot of us, setting up bit torrent and dl these files is not a problem. But for a joe average user that thinks you uninstall packages by deleting its icon on the desktop you pose another barrier thats preventing people from being part of your site. Your option to choose BT will definately reduce your bandwidth requirements but I predict it will be due to a sacrifice in user base.

Its true that http links are often distributed, allowing files to be leeched with out even visiting the site. However, I would argue that you are much less likely to experience this with the content you are proposing. Again touching on the reasons above, your content is fairly selective as to its audience. You could always consider thinking bigger and taking the site to the next level. Supplying http links but helping to fund the site with unobtrusive adverts from sites such as dontstayin or record shops etc. This prob isnt an option at the current time but maybe something to aim for if you are interested in that kind of route.

Yup :)

Good stuff. I'm glad you guys made the decision to support HTTP aswell, i think the pro's definately out weigh the cons. As a way of tempting users to BT you could try offering some only via BT, or something like torrents get posted 3 days before http etc.. I dunno if it would work but its an incentive anyways.
