CLUBBER ABDUCTED BY GANG Dec 14 2004

A TEENAGER was abducted by a gang after flagging down what he thought was a taxi outside a nightclub.Police are treating the incident as attempted murder after the clubber was beaten up and robbed of his wallet.

The 18-year-old mistook a blue Ford Escort for a cab after leaving Plush in East Kilbride's town centre in the early hours of yesterday. But there were already three men in the motor when he climbed in.

The car sped off and he was unable to get out. Police believe the car was driven around the Lanarkshire town before being taken to Carmunnock and Castlemilk in Glasgow. The victim was kept prisoner for more than an hour before he was attacked by the men and his wallet stolen.

He was eventually released and the car was found abandoned and on fire in Strathfillan Road, East Kilbride. The victim was taken by ambulance to the town's Hairmyres Hospital. He was treated for leg and facial injuries then released. The suspects are described as white, 21 to 23 years old and had Glasgow accents. One of the suspects wore a light-coloured jacket.

The car is believed to have been involved in an accident on Sunday afternoon on the M74 close to Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Detective Inspector David Marshall said: 'It appears the Ford Escort lost control and struck the central reservation.' He asked for anyone with information to come forward. The young man was last night with his family recovering from his ordeal.

The car is not believed to have been stolen.
