I've been reading a few posts here about the Guardia Civil, and to me it seems like they're people to watch out for, as opposed to other countries where you'd feel safe around people of the law. Are they really that bad, and do they ever do anything that you find questionable?

don't do anything wrong and they will leave you alone.

However i know of plenty of people getting beaten up for minor offences. They can lock you up for a few days without a real reason, whilst locked up expect to get beaten up a few times if they don't like you. On the + side if you get pulled over for drink driving you can buy your way out of trouble for a few hundred euros, if you're a pretty girl you can often talk your way out of trouble!

Look, I am spanish, so all what you are saying is rubish. Guardia civil is just police, we are in a democratic country and you cannot be punished or locked away without reason. Of course if you are driving drank you must pay the consecuences, if you drive drank you can kill yourself and obviosly other innocent people. And is not true you can pay guardia civil Maybe one or two corrupted, the same I can say of police of other contries. I am a lawyer and I know what I am talking. Is a pit that still nowadays we have to put up with people that cannot understand that things undemocratic are not allowed in our country, spot with the topics about our country.

And ofcourse, nonsense, if they do not like you ,you are beaten, thats rubish. Por favor, un poco de seriedad y menos difamación y respeto .
If you do not know just do not give your opinion

I don't know about beatings etc. BUT one thing is sure:

Guardia Civil does random searches to people going Amnesia and Space. That is illegal without a cause.

Of course that is a practice in all contries I know they do searches in England, I was a victim of that some years a go. My friend was searchead in airport too.I do Know they do it in France, in Italy, in Denmark, they do it everywhere, I do not think is rigth, but what I don't do is say that in all this contries police beat and keep people locked all the time they want and without any reason. The fact that some police abuse of they power doesn't mean that all the police does that. The fact that some police acept money from people does not mean that all the police behave that way. I does not mean that is normal practice, that it is what it has been said here in this topic.
when that happened in England my english friend was absolutly ashamed I told her not to worry I didn't thougth it was a normal behaviour but I didn't though it was a normal practice of yhe police of England.
I can understand that everybody can have a bad experience with police, sometimes people is very rude, I have a bad experience with a guardia civil. I discussed with him about something, I dint' hve the sense that I was in danger. And when I have guardia civil next to me in a fiesta or in the street I do not think I am in danger, I do not even reliased they are there. But people prefer to think that when they go to Spain if they got a problem with the police is because the police is allowed to do that. What you got to do is make a formal protest and you would have the answer.
That is what you have to do, protest. I said I am use to treat with police , I a lawyer, always in the other side. And I can give you my word is not normal. Could happen, of course, but is not normal, is not a normal practice, allowed by everybody.
Everybody has seen that video of that poor american boy beaten by the police, I do not think that proves all the american police go beaten everybody.
This is the point of view of one that lives in Spain, that has more experience with this people, that has seen bad behaviour of the guardia civil, the regret of other guardia civil of the bad behaviour of they partners and also the good behaviour and good service to the community of this cuerpo, that is the way the behave most of the times.
Saludos

Thanks, you've been very helpful. I just mentioned it because I've read in other posts about the guardia civil beating foreigners with their batons after seaching them and NOT finding any drugs. That kind of thing might turn off a few people from coming there.

Really? I'm starting to think they go a little beyond what police in other countries do. mikkak, all of these stories can't be lies.

I am not deniying that some stories could be true, I am saying that is not a normal and usual practice. Obviously the only ones who have something to say about guardia civil are the only ones who migth say something in this subject. I do not live in state police, If this sort of thing was happening so often obviously people wouldn't come over here. I am absolutly sure of what I am saying as I live here all the year and I am not bashed all over, nor my neigbours or friends. .
By the way I have seen english police bashing hooligans in futboll camps and demonstration and I supose you think is normal. Sometimes english police my go off they nerves with drank people, that does not justify violence, violence is just justified if there is danger for police or a third person. But seeing that sort of videos in tv does not make me think that is allways like that, I have confidence in english goverment if that was a normal practice they would probably do something about it.
You are hearing the testimony of some people, I am not saying that what they are saying isn't true, you heard about my testimony as how I was searched by english police when I was walking at nigth in the street, you heard that my friend was searched in Gatwich airport and pushed around some years a go, two testimonys about rude english police, how many people can say the same, a lot I supose , that means that english police are harder then others? I do not think so. You hear the same about Guardia civil, of course it is true without doubt, I bet you did not even took any notice about what I said happened with those particular english police. My partner defended a lot of people that have been charged for driving drank, some of them foreigns that live in Spain, What they was doing there if all guardia civil acept money for not reporting them?, I have seen people that have been in the police station, some of them, english, german, french, they did not repot anything about being smashed all over, , some of them even make jokes with the guardia civil
Well obviously I cannot convince you, 4 testimonys says all about all the Guardia civil in Spain. But if you got any problem when you are in Spain dont' worry they would help you just the same.

In my two weeks there recently I saw lots of Guardia and Policia about but they waz always chilled and just keeping and eye on things as they should be doing. I drove 1000 km on a motorcycle and never got pulled over once.

I have lived in a police state so I know what that is like, if you going to be an asshole and cause problems I am sure they will respond. The feeling I got is that they are doing a good job in Ibiza.

I have been beaten up before by the Guardia, this was in 1990 and was for being with a person who got caught with about £5 worth of smoke on them walking back from the cafe del mar.

I know several people who claim they were held for no reason for several days and were beaten up. This i accept maybe incorrect as the people in question do have a dubious reputation and could have done something they didn't want to tell me about. Yet if they were guilty why were they let off without charge?

I know at least 3 women who in the last year have been let off with drink driving due to their abillity to flirt (and they are spanish which helps) 2 were caught by the guardia traffic cops and 1 by the local police.

It is not illegal to search people who are going into a club. FACT.

Maybe not in America, but I think you'll find that in Europe they can.

Plus lets not forget thare are two types of police:

Policia Local and Guardia civil

The former is the equivilent to The Met, the latter more like the military police
