Right to Life?

What's your opinion on the "Right to Life" debate? Obviously this has been in the news a lot lately, what with the sad death of Terri Scheider, the brain damaged woman in the USA who's husband wanted to let her die, whereas her parents fought to keep her alive.

Would you want to be kept alive if that was you? Personally I wouldnt. I dont see what quality of life that can be for a person. Unless I still had my brain I wouldnt want to waste away like that :(

I agree Bec, personally I would like to have the choice or someone else to have the choice to let me go if I was ever in that position.

I've already asked Tom if anything happens to me like that I want him to sneakily give me so many drugs that I go. I can't think of anything worse than being in that state plus it would be horrible for all my family and friends to have to see me in that state. I'd rather just get it over with and be gone.

Pull the plug on me if that happened.

I'd want my wife to get over it and move on.

(unless she put me there in the first place)

Pep and I wrote our vital testament, so if ever it happens to one of us there's written proves that we don't want to be semi-alive.

Last Amenabar's film (the others' film maker) it's the story of Ramon Sampedro, a spanish guy who lived in a bed for 20 years and asked several times to be killed. Really really interesting and beauty film ;)

A contentious issue but I personally agree with all of you - I wouldn't want to be kept alive.

My father suffered from Alzheimer’s for seven very long years and I can't describe how difficult it was for all of us for the last couple of years. He clearly suffered as did we all but I kind of understand how Terri's family felt about her situation

Shows a good case for a 'living will'. I doubt I would want to be kept alive in such circumstances. BUT, leting somebody die by starvation like that is hideous. I looked after a learning disabled client who was unable to eat, but wouldn't tolerate peg feeding (a tube directly into the stomach), and so he effectively starved himself to death. We were assured by the doctor that he would only live on for 3-5 days once fluids were withdrawn. ELEVEN days later he died. The smell of his organs putrifying in his body as they shut down over the last few days of his life is something I will NEVER forget. Makes a strong case for euthanasia in my book. I would've given anything to just be able to push the button on his syringe driver and give him an overdose of morphine to end his suffering.

Well so far no one has said they would want to stay alive and I agree.

We take sick animals to the vets to be put down but a woman with a quality of life worse than your wildest dreams has to be starved to death to escape her living hell?

In the year 2005?

That's not right.

Her name was Terri Schiavo.

I, of course, agree with everyone that I don't want to be kept alive in a vegatative state. Starve, suffocate, whatever... just let me die.

I think in the Schiavo case, as it often is, it is the selfishness of others (in this case, the parents) who can not deal with letting go that causes all the problems. What is even more frightening was the massive involvement of the government, press, and public in this case. It was a horrible precedent....

It was very shocking! Those religious nuts hanging around swaying, chanting and holding placards. What business was it of theres? It was the business of her family and the court. I can imagine that the husband of Terri will get death threats and get harassed by these nuts. I think he has suffered enough.

Theres protesters for everything in America. Personally, I'd rather go. But what i thought was sad about this case in particulair was Terri's parents, who obviously didnt want to let go. I think that should have been taken into consideration as well. And also agreed, letting somebody die like that is awful.

think about this, if there was a law passed in the us & uk for that matter to end the lives of everyone with nil brain activity, the population would probably shrink by half!!!
