PIN in Spain / Ibiza?

Hello there fellow Ibiza goers.

Can anyone tell me if the Spanish laws require a PIN number transaction when you use your creditcard over there? You know like in England, whenever you buy anything from a shop now you have to key in your PIN number. Does that apply in Ibiza or can you still sign for things?

Because I dont know my creditcard PIN (I chucked it away for obvious reasons lol) but I know I'm going to have to use it in Ibiza this year!

Muchos Gracias!

I had a massive problem with this in Prague when I went :? I think it's quite a europe wide thingy.

Ring up and get a new pin sent - it'll only take a few days. If your card has been set up for a pin number often they don't let you sign for things as they then reckon you're a thief.

With my Egg creditcard I sign even here in Spain....even though they have sent me a pin....I still sign back in the UK too.:?

With my HSBC debit card I put in the pin AND sign!:?

I'm not sure if it has to see with the country or the payment system of your credit card. Can't you get a new pin number?

I can get a new PIN but I purposely didn't want one because then I can pop into various shops and buy clothes other rubbish on credit. At least if I don't know the PIN the only things I can put on my card are important things like holidays, tickets etc.

I guess I could get a PIN for Ibiza then try and forget it when I come home :?

We never use the pin thing in Spain, we only sign the paper and that's all. But... I don't know if a brit card will ask for the confirmation pin ;)

PMSL, or you could get some willpower and avoid the shops  ;)

I had to use my PIN in most places in Barcelona in January so I'd assume it's pretty Europe wide now.

I might get a new PIN, then tell Jon to open it and remember it, then only IF I need to use it in Ibiza he can type it in lol.

Otherwise, seriously, come July I'll have about £4297144656.26 of needless purchases on there if I know my PIN lol.

I had to sign in Barcelona in January so it must be our cards :?

get a new pin, when you get back get your boyfriend to change the pin in a cash machine to something you won't be able to guess!

OR just severely scratch the smart card bit so it can't be used in machines once you've got back from ibiza.

I never needed any PIN number to do a credit card transaction in Spain. I just needed that when I had to withdraw cash using my ATM Checking Card. I need my PIN number for my ATM card even in the US.

Becki, most shops in Ibiza ask for your passport when you use your credit card, so make sure you've got it with you so you don't get ejected from the front of the queue in shame like I did

Do you think it's worth me applying for a PIN though? I just know I'll abuse it once I get it

I would just to be on the safe side- you can always get them to change it again when you get back so you don't know the number.

I read in the paper the other day that there is a big problem with gangs cloning cards in the UK and then using them on the continent, so they might have stepped up security.

Yes, you should apply for a PIN. The time it takes for you to punch in the PIN will probably give you some time to reconsider using the credit card like a rapier.:spank:
