New User to Youtube site - Question . . .

Having just signed up with the Youtube site I was chuffed to see there are loads of Lamb videos available on there.

I would really like to save some of these files for future use - maybe ultimately transferring them to CD.

Is there a way of doing this ?

On the Help file on the site it advocates saving the file as a favourite if you need to access them again.

However, if you save as a favourite on one PC is it then accessible on a different PC ? - ie does the favourite list follow the user profile ?

Are they talking about some YouTube 'favorites' function, or the favorites function in your web browser?

If it's the latter, you won't see your favorites from one computer on another one unless you copy them or you're part of a network set up a certain way.

The YouTube site is down for maintainence right now so I can't check if thery have some internal favorites function.

I believe it's an internal feature and has nothing to do with your IE favourites.

The videos you view on you tube do however "save" in your browsers cache. Generally you can copy these to a directory on your hard drive and rename them giving them a new file extension i.e. .avi, .mpg or .wmv.

Hope that helps

Thanks for replies.

The favourites feature is an internal part of youtube.

I have not tested it yet so don't know if when you add a video to favourites it saves on the youtube server for quicker access next time or the system relies on you keeping your temporary files in place on the pc you are using.

Hence I'm not sure if I'll be able to download on my fast pc and then watch on my slow pc from the favouries area.

Good tip about locating the files that have been downloaded via the cache. Hopefully it will be easy to spot them due to the large size. Wonder what file extension they have ?

Some experimentation is due once the site is back up I feel !

i think they are normal video files converted in flash files mate and would have an swf extension. If you can find a way to pull the swf file out and download it, then you could feasibly watch it in any flash enabled browser or player.

You can embed them in myspace pages, so I assume you will be able to pull the swf file out somehow, but I can't be bothered checking

Ah, I can see no work being done today :)

It looks at first glance that the files are in the FLV format (macromedia flash video).

You can therefore pluck them from the cache and copy them wherever.

On Download.com I have located a FLV player called ' FLV player 1.3.3 ' that comes in at just over a MG.

Getting somewhere :)

Now to check out the favourites function as I can't see work being too chuffed at me using their system to mail Megs and Megs of video files home !

Yep works a treat.

Downloaded the free Riva flv player and have pulled a few files from my cache and they play fine.

Result!!

Yeah, I have a bit of a fetish for all things Lamb.

I have a Quicktime Video of a steaming plate of lamb, potatoes and mint sauce plus a WMV of a newly shorn lamb frollicking in a field (bit naughtly that one).

Nah, if you are not familiar with the band Lamb I urge you to check them out. They are loosely described as trip hop but had a wide range of styles - lots of lovely ballads as well.

They are responsible for stuff like Gorecki, Gabriel etc and are played a fair bit on the Sunset Strip.

The lead singer has a truly amazing voice and is often backed by amazingly original electronic music. I can safely say that when I heard Lamb I had never heard music like it anywhere else.

They have broken up now but the lead singer (Lou Rhodes) has just released an acoustic album and is touring at the moment.

Anyhow, I better shut up now . . . I tend to be a bit of a Lamb nerd given half a chance.

i'm sure I've come across Lamb before (and before someone quotes me, yes, I can see theres an easy punchline there)
