London

Me and my other half are thinking of moving down to London next year. We both really love it, but am getting sick of everybody I mention it to blathering on about how expensive it is, we will never have any money yada yada yada!

For those of you who live in London.....is it really that expensive, do the higher wages cancel out the extra cost of living etc?

Where are nice areas to live (Central London, don't really want to be out of London spending a fortune on tube fares!) that are relitavly affordable and how much would you reckon we are looking at paying for rent in a 1 bedroomed flat?

Cheers guys, as much info as poss greatly appreciated to shut up all the pesimists! :D

The only thing that is more expensive in London is property prices and you do get a higher salary than elsewhere in the country. What do you and your g/friend do??

Apart from property I don't really notice London being expensive, it can be as expensive or a cheap as you want it to be.

Re renting I've no idea cos I've always bought, I do know that if we were to rent our flat in West London we would get about £1200 a month for it.

Probably best off looking at Loot which will give you idea of prices. Re location, it's hard to say without knowing where you're going to be working and what's important to you.

London's fab, I've been living down here for 6 years now and I couldn't ever imagine living elsewhere, it's such a great city, so much to do, so many different types of people.

Hope it works out for you and your girlie :D

Hi Mate

An ex Mancunian here

I did the big move 6mths ago!!

In answer to your question, in my opinion, which some may agree or disagree with.

Yes & No!!

the cost of living doesnt seem that different.

If you live in Central London, then you are going to pay more for your accomodation/rent/mortgage, if you go a bit out which is what I have done, then it isnt too bad and the cost of getting in and out of the city isnt that bad, It takes me 45 mins all told to get to my desk in the mornings using train & bus, for a cost of £30 a week.

My house cost probably the same as it's equivalent in Didsbury, in central london would prob cost 2-3 x as much??

I think the extra travel is worth it ;)
