Live 8 - line-up announced
Last updated 31 May 2005

He said he'd never do it, but 20 years after Sir Bob Geldof put on the biggest concert the world's ever seen, it's happening all over again.

On July 2nd London's Hyde Park will be one of the five venues hosting Live 8, some of the bands confirmed on the bill are Coldplay, Elton John, Madonna and Muse. The other cities where Live 8 concerts will take place are Berlin, Paris, Rome and Philadelphia.

Unlike the original Live Aid in 1985, it's not a charity event, but aims to draw attention to world poverty. It's being called Live 8 because the world's richest countries are meeting at the G8 summit a week later.

Bob Geldof said of Live 8:

"Charity will never really solve problems. It is time for justice - and 20 years after Live Aid, people now demand it of these eight men. The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history."

Ticket details
Tickets for the London Hyde Park concert will be free and will be available through a special text lottery.

The text number will be announced at 8am on Monday 6 June 2005 via all UK Radio Stations and BBC Television. No ticket entries will be accepted before that time.

The text line will remain open for 7 days, and 75,000 pairs of tickets will be randomly chosen by computer. There are no limits to the amount of times you can text. Each text costs £1.50 plus your usual network text charge.

The BBC and Live 8
Radio 1 will be broadcasting from Hyde Park throughout the day and then crossing to the States to bring you the event live. Plus we'll have news and reports from the other concerts round the world.

On television Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton will also be reporting live from different sides of the Atlantic, with Jonathan in the UK and Graham in the USA.

Big screens will be placed around the UK, to bring the BBC coverage of Live 8 to those unable to attend the concert or watch at home.

:D

If you have to pay nearly $3 for a text, and it takes you several to win a ticket, how is that free? :?

I guess the text costs are to pay for all the costs incurred from insurance, policing, equipment and services hire and lots of other things.

I'm suprised the tickets are 'free'

Surely even £10 a head would raise decent wedge for good causes :?

...about £750,000 in fact!

I think they should just sell the tickets. Make it predictable and transparent. Everyone would pay, no problem.

I also don't like that old Sir Bob is just "trying to raise awareness". Anyone who is not living in a hut knows that there's hunger in Africa. You could use an event of this caliber to raise money for humanitarian efforts AND try to get people involved.

I doubt £750,000 would cover the costs of all the things i mentioned above!

It does seem a bit strange.......they'd easily sell it out with that lineup if they charged £50 a ticket! Bob is a bit of a weirdo though

The amount of money they could raise is collossal! The line up in any of the venues would sell out twice (ok, except maybe Rome, though I've never seen Duranx2 live  )

I wrote it off the other week when I heard the spice girls might have been reforming for a one off gig there but that line up looks good :)
