.. I was thinking of renting a car and driving around the island... but many of you say that the driving is awful in Ibiza! Is it the condition of the roads? The drivers? the traffic? Is it congested throughout the whole island?
thanks muchly! :D

No matter what, just get the full insurance coverage and you'll be fine. If you're renting and you have full coverage if someone nicks you, its not your car anyway. If you don't rent a car you can't explore!

yeah.. I"ll be on myown though.. just worried it 'll be a bit pricey.
Def. want to hire a car despite the bad driver warnings!
how much am I looking at per day for the cheapy cheap cars?

The main rule of driving out there is apperently :

IF IN DOUBT, WHACK YOUR HAZARDS ON

Everyone out there does it ! Just parks up on some corner of a cross roads, but don't worry, the hazards are on. Run over a small child, no problem, that's what the hazards are for.

Crazay !

if you hire a car, use it to get out into the country and distant beaches.

don't use it to go to ibiza town or the back streets of figuretes -that's what the bus is for.

you will find that if you take the smaller roads you won't meet with many fellow travellers. last saturday i drove from san antonio to san jose on the benimussa road and only met one other car!

btw my car is covered in dents and scratches - i collected my first the day after i picked it up - but i have never once been present in the car when a new one appeared.

I saw two parked cars get bumped in a week, unlike in england where everyone gets all dramatic, the person responsible simply chuckled and drove off.

i like to watch from my balcony and laugh at the spanish try and park their cars. Most just come to a stop in the middle of the road and get out of their cars. Saw several cars parked on the corners of roads. As for the driving, they dont know what all the zebra crossings are for, they must think it is just a pretty design painted in the middle of the roads. When crossing, you just run for your life and hope you make it to the other end.

Interesting what Stephen said about the road through Benimussa, I was on that road the other day and saw only one car it came straight at us on a one lane track at around sixty I slammed on the brakes and nearly ran into a ditch then I had a spanish bloke yelling at me that I was using up too much of the road (there was approx six inches between my front wheel and the ditch when I stopped), mind you he had Barcelona plates so I wasn't surprised! Everyone here on Barcelona or Madrid plates seems to drive as fast as they can everywhere, they overtake on blind bends and even in a traffic jam will try and overtake you.

Having said that it is the only way to reach so many beautiful parts of the island.

I hired a car from hispancar (mentioned in post above) picked up at airport had for 7 days was great, the drivers there are not that mad really...and we only paid for a 1.4 clio and ended up with a brand new 1.8 sporty focus...which was a touch....

really the only times u really have to watch out are in the towns and roundabouts! the big straight main roads are fine :)

July and August is pretty busy but I have just worked out that I have driven about 20,000 km on Ibiza without an accident ( well not counting the bl**dy tree that grew after I had passed down a narrow dirt track and when I had to reverse back up it this tree got in my way that was def not there on the way down  )
Doesn't happen in England but one weird thing is that they tend to "protect" each other in that when someone is turning left, they all signal left but carry straight on - is this just Ibicenco or European in general?

im an "oldie" here, i really can say that the streets nowadays are perfect,....the"kids" here dont know the conditions of the roads 20 years ago...adventure!....today no problems, just take care when it rain!!!!! :!:

dont drive fast, and for all british: please drive on the right side ;) :D

actually the first time we were in ibiza we rented a jeep and proceeded to get in a minor accident immediately! it was our fault though so what can you say? not a big problem at all though for us. the policia came and it went over very smoothly. there couldn't have been much more than a scratch on either car.

I always rented a car during my vacations in Ibiza.
It has so many advantages over using public transportation:

It saves u the hassle of waiting in the long taxi/bus queues
At the end of the day it's more affordable (aka: cheaper than using public transportation)
It enables u to drive to far away locations and explore the island
It's much more comfortable
You are able to place your belongings in the car while going out clubbing
