not long ago our amigo icebaer69 asked.....

san an is improving fast,
is pdb falling behind ?
..... the answer was, obviously, YES :!:

seems like things might change though..... after yearsandyearsandyears ignored by the pro-motorways/pro-golf courses/pro-bull5hit right government the left has announced a much needed facelift for playa den bossa:

 integral remodeling for playa den bossa
"it is a key place in the island but its development in the last 15 years didnt go in the direction we all would have wished, which deteriorated it, and it is receiving a tourism of a lower level to which it would correspond to it"

 tarrés announces that madrid will pay the integral remodeling of playa den bossa
"of the financing that comes from the central government there will be money in 2008 for the remodeling of playa den bossa"

about time.....

without knowing how pdb was in the past...but having seen it 2 years ago...this place definitely needs a revamp asap...a thing that i noticed too was the low quality tourists that attracted a bit like west end but in a smaller scale...
i hope though that the integral remodelling that is announced doesn't affect Bora Bora and Space something that looks quite possible...

the president of the consell insular and the mayoress of ibiza town had a reunion with the minister of environmental affairs in madrid this afternoon and got the OK to do a promenade from figueretas to playa den bossa..... which also means that matutes and his pro-motorways/pro-golf courses/pro-lets-destroy-the-island amigos wont be able to build their stupid port in es vivé for now :!:

the works on the first part of the promenade (from figueretas to es vivé) are expected to start in 2008.....

 the works on the promenade between figueretas and playa den bossa will start next year
"all along all the coast that belongs to ibiza town, from the hotel los molinos till the hotel algarb"

 the promenade will be divided in three parts
"the first one will include the remodeling of the existing promenade. the second one, from the end of figueretas beach, it will be a wooden structure that will pass along the rocks till playa den bossa. finally, on that beach, a smaller wood footpath till the hotel algarb"

Interesting. To be fair the path/promenade from PdB to Figeuritas was always a bit crap, so not a bad decision.

Whats the craic with the facade of that big building just past Bora Bora?

Looks awful...

Any improvement to PDB is obviously a good thing. Badly needs a tidy up.

the promenade from pdb stops at es vive area. if you can call it one.just a tarmac road from algarb hotel.if some how it could be joined up to Figeuritas.that would be nice for a stroll.and if it was well lit up at night even better.ok they put a wall up near bossa mar appts/bull bar front.but when it rains all the mud covers the path.
some of the pavements need upgrading so wheelchairs can get around.plus slabs need replacings all over the area.tarmac the funfair area.a lick of paint would not go a miss.ie some hotels aptts and curbs.
don;t let it go passed the algarb start it there.better street lighting in darks areas.like from mare nostrum to tivoli aptts.same with lighting from space to palm beach hotel.)to dark at night).thats why most go ai on drinks.not safe at night to walk with kids.even i have got a taxi to nip to bars.and i am 44.
even put a few cctvs up.in 79 there was one or two beach bars and one hotel.now it looks like a building site in parts

Bossa Facelift
On Wednesday, President of the Consell Insular, Xico Tarres, announced a nine per cent increase to the annual budget for 2008. His administration will have a total of €81million at their disposal, an amount that for the first time does not include Formentera, which will receive an individual budget. The vast majority will come from the Govern Balear (62 per cent), with 23 per cent from Central Government, nine per cent from the European Union, and six per cent from the Consell itself.
The president was quick to pay homage to Tomas Mendez, the minister behind the budget proposals, and someone who had fought hard for an adequate sum for the island.
Although exact plans are still to be revealed, Tarres said around 55 per cent would be spent on social issues - one of his plans including a considerable increase in the amount of staff working at the residence of Cas Serres - and an increase in the current social programme on the island.
A considerable chunk would also be spent on improving public transport (€1.5 million) and the road network (€4.5million), whilst avoiding the huge road building projects of the previous administration, which according to Tarres have no place on an island like Ibiza.
However the "star" project for next year is to be the total remodelling of Playa den Bossa, an area which has become dilapidated over the last ten years. Tarres saw the area as key to the future of tourism on the island, but admitted work needed to be done to improve the type of tourism the area currently received, claiming that poor administration had led to the current crisis in the district. The idea is part of a general project to improve various tourist zones on the island, with Playa den Bossa at its core.
The importance of sport in terms of social integration has long been lauded by the president, and he is to present several related projects, including the remodelling of the sports centre in sa Coma, which will include the building of an Olympic sized swimming pool. Sports clubs on the island will also see their subsidies increased.
However, Tarres was quick to point out that both of these projects will be financed directly by Central Government and will not eat into the Consell´s budget, with the total outlay on the projects in excess of €100million. The Consell will also spend around €450,000 building a number of public pre-schools across the island. Tarres said the first part of the process was to secure the money, and over the coming weeks he would release more details of the projects that are set to get underway during 2008.

New Boardwalk
After a recent meeting with the Minister for the Environment for the Central Government, Cristina Narbona, the mayor of Ibiza Town, Lurdes Costa, announced the news that work on a promenade would begin in 2008. The minister surprised both the mayor and the president of the Consell, Xico Tarres, with her willingness to begin the project, as she revealed the initial plans would be ready by March 2008, which could mean the work getting underway the following winter.
The promenade will begin in ses Figueretas close to the Los Molinos hotel and continue through es Viver ending next to the Algarb hotel in Playa den Bossa, on the municipalities border.
Costa revealed the project would integrate well with the current environment in the area and would use beach land to build on, which would enable the various restaurants and bars on the coast to make the area more dynamic.
The project will also be an opportunity for the municipal to "clean-up" the various building misdemeanours in the area, which include several buildings which encroach onto public land, as well as a number of swimming pools. Costa revealed every case would be dealt with individually, but did not expect too many problems.

One of my favourite parts of Ibiza, probably because of all our happy memories. I absolutely love strolling up the promenade from Prince's bar on the corner towards Ibiza town in the evening.

In all honesty the walk from Figueretas to PDB was always a bit of fun, I think it's possible to overdo the development? On one hand they are wanting to demolish cafes that have existed for decades and yet put down endless miles on concrete?:confused: I suppose for the good of all the new promenade will be a nice addition.

I love how there is no promenade near the Hotel PDB - you're not that far from Ibiza Town, but you can relax and feel like you are because you have so much sand to walk in instead of walking out of your hotel onto concrete. So close, yet so far away. The promenade is cool, though, when your legs get tired.

it needs it, the past 4 years when i've been in PDB it's felt like an absolute dump full of some pretty rank people too, it's like a san an overspill

When I first went to Ibiza I stayed in PDB in 98, I liked it back then no building work was going on, you had a full view of the beach driving by now all you have is horrid high rise shops/appts.

Plus Space used to be a delight in those days  and DC10 wasn't full of San Anners on E

PdBdefinitely needs it. It's stood still while the rest of the island's developed. It's why I stay in Figueritas now, as there's very few decent places to eat there and it does feel more like San An bay every year.

But it's got charm, and hopefully it'll be a step in the right direction.

ibiza's council representative for tourism, pepa mari,
talks to ibizaNOW:

"...
IbizaNOW:
How is the tourist sector on Ibiza doing at the moment?

Pepa Mari:
Its health has suffered somewhat, but the sector is a robust one so I'm not unduly worried.
This island of Ibiza has achieved such widespread recognition as a holiday destination
over the years that the brand now pretty much sells itself.
However, we need to ask ourselves where we want to be five years down the line.
We have a lot of work ahead of us and people need to invest in the island.

Take the Platja d'en Bossa, for example.
This zone needs to be completely restructured and
must be brought into line with today's standards.
This means improving hygiene,
maintaining the parks,
increasing the services available on the beaches,
providing facilities that are accessible to the disabled...
in short, the whole environment needs to be made more attractive.

from the ibiza sun:

Minister's Visit
The minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism for the National Government, Joan Clos, visited the island last Monday, where he confirmed the healthy state of the tourist industry on a national level. Although he said he did not have specific statistics for the Balearics, he confirmed that tourist expenditure grew by 5 per cent in January and the current economic crisis in Europe would not affect the tourist season during 2008.
While other sectors, including construction, had started to decelerate due to the continued economic squeeze across Europe, Clos assured worried hoteliers and businesses that he saw no reason for a decline in numbers this year. He said the industry was, at the moment, very stable and that if businesses continued to invest in their product, there was no cause for alarm in the near future. He claimed the luxury hotel market was currently booming, and those hotels of 4-stars and above were those that could easily compete on a worldwide scale.
The minister caused a considerable amount of controversy during an early morning meeting with members of the press, after he announced he was unaware of the Playa den Bossa project, which was sent to his ministry late last year. The project, which was described by the president of the Consell, Xico Tarres, as the most important in his four year administration, is hoping to completely reform the run down area, and transform its fortunes and negative image. Tarres said he had not briefed the minister about the project and understood he did not know about it personally, claiming it would be impossible for the minister to know first hand all of the projects that are dealt with by his ministry. Tarres underlined the importance of the project, and said he hoped it would begin after the summer season.

typical!!
