A friend of mine was flying through an ash cloud not so long ago, she thought they were going to die. They lost an engine and it was all over the place. She even hid her passport in her knickers in case they crashed

Got to feel sorry for people who have had their holidays cancelled/delayed, but what can you do

The Air Crash Investigation documentary on BA flight 009 that flew through Volcanic ash in 1982 is on Nat Geographic today at 4pm and 10pm............

Coincidence or what!

"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control. I trust you are not in too much distress."

I just read that the little bits of rock & debris inside the ash clouds will melt when getting sucked up into the plane engines and re-solidify inside, causing them to fail. Usually they can be restarted but no one wants to take a chance on that!

Same article said this eruption could go on for weeks, not just days. Further disruption to air traffic depends on wind/weather patterns.

The real Danger with dry volcanic Ash is that Radar cant pick it up..............

That's the one thing that worries me about Ibiza, it's an island and if the flights are down for days, being stranded.
On the mainland the obvious escape route would be rail, but to get to the mainland from Ibiza is quite a slog. Ferry to Barcelona (several hours, and they don't seem to be daily) would be an option, as would ferry to Valencia or Denia, but that's taking me even further from where I want to return to!

Ibiza Gain....Reboot & Robert Dietz at Pacha tonite....we, at Raum...lose Martinez.....bugger....shame im still in Bcn....next week bk on the island :D

stranded

I have about 200 people , families and children that came for easter..etc stranded here in ibiza at the moment, they have been told its probably going to be at least 5 days before ryanair can get them onto flights home, its costing them a fortune to pay for unplanned hotels, taxis, food etc.. some have tried to get ferrys, trains and planes to uk via other destinations, but been quoted 100s of pounds.. their insurance companies have told them they are not covered because it is a natural disaster... and they are not on packaged holidays..

Going in two weeks and I'm getting worried - poxy icelanders first nick our money and now want to ruin our holidays - nuke the place...........................

Could be longer. Until the wind changes (not forecasted until next weekend) they won't be any flying. How about Ferry to Deina, train to Santander, then ferry to Portsmouth and trin to where ever in the UK?
