I had this discussion with someone when I was out there last year and came to the conclusion that there's nothing wrong with being patriotic as long as it ain't from a nationalistic point of view...ie - is this date a celebration of the fact that Captain Cook sailed over and laid claim to Australia, filled it full of convicts and stamped on the longest surviving indigenous culture in the world???
...Or is it just an excuse to have a drink and be silly?
I suspect the latter but it's still a point worth thinking about.

I was so drunk on snakebite last night, I had a meeting at 2pm today and my boss asked if I'd been out drinking 'cos he could smell it on my breath from across a meeting table
