Good news I wasn't expecting

Been DJing in my residency for over 3 years. Could only do Friday & Saturdays as that's all they had an entertainment license for.

A couple of months ago we were discussing the new 24 hour licensing and I suggested getting a later license for Friday & Saturday (we currently close at midnight) to compete with the nightclubs and also a license for Sunday nights. Friday night got told that it's all happening in about 2 or 3 weeks, wasn't expecting it til September. According to the official notice we will have a 12.30am license all week and a 1.00am license for Friday & Saturday. Only 2 other pubs have applied in our local town and only 1 of them has a disco, the rest haven't bothered or been refused.

This means as I'm the sole resident DJ (all the other discos have between 3 & 5 DJ's) I will be working Friday to Sunday for a living wage. :P Will still be doing some part-time driving during the week but don't need to if I don't want to. 'Course it does make it awkward going on holiday to Ibiza or Spain as they refuse to have a stand-in DJ and just use MiniDisks to cover the time I'm away.

We have been a feeder for the biggest nightclub in the area (holds 1,100) but it's mainly hardcore/rave/techno/trance. Have already started to change the music to create our own identity with more mainstream dance/house music. :D The futures looking good yay! :D

Congratulations! Sounds like you'll have the coolest gig in toon!

Still, 1am isn't so late... what time does your town shut down on weekends?

2am, yeh I know it's a bit old fashioned, but we're a small town 12 miles from the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. We're growing fast with loads of new houses being built in every nook and crany as we are fast becoming a commuter town. There's nowhere open after 2am except the pizza shops and taxi offices.

Yeh, well, somebody's got to do it!

I've DJed in this town for over 28 years (seen loadsa young DJs come and go), it's great to be making a living from it. :D

Thats experience! ;)

Hee hee, starting to get the hang of it now! ;)

Started as resident in my local nightclub in 1976 playing predominately Soul & black music (hence the screen name), just as 12" singles were starting to appear. 8) I distinctly remember the enormous pleasure of buying my first 7" import single as a DJ, The Isley Brothers - The Pride. Still got it along with every other vinyl record I ever bought. Still recording them to my laptop, been doing that for a few years and it's gonna take a few more years yet. I still spend a fortune on mainly upfront Funky House vinyl but I also buy all the commercial chart music (usually on CD or paid for downloads).

That original nightclub has gone thru several transformations and owners and is still a nightclub. 3 years ago it was ironically a 70's nightclub and I did a one-off night there. How spooky was that! On the same stage I started on 25 years earlier playing the original 70's tunes. I raised the roof that night and people still talk about it being the best 70's night they ever had in there. :D

I intend to keep on going as long as pubs and clubs still want me. 8)
