How wonderful to see the rioters going ballistic a few days before our stag party arrives! The place sounds dodgy enough without the local yocals going mental:rolleyes:

The Hungarian prime minister was absolutely brilliant
"We lied morning, noon and night." Great line! No wonder his people are rioting!

Aside from that, I've never heard Budapest was a dodgy city... everyone I know that's been there said it was quite quiet. and beautiful.

Dodgy?
For what I know it's a very nice city, similar to Prague and there's lots of words to descrive Prague except dodgy

I spoke to a friend who had been with a group of guys last year, one of the guys was marched to a cash machine at gun point to pay for an extortionate bar bill. Perhaps this is a very rare happening, but not one I wish to encounter!

my wife hates budapest but loves prague. it's chalk and cheese! i have questioned her at great length about the merits of both cities and she has absolutely no idea how much a pint costs in either!

Budapest is an amazing place.
Nightlife is very good if basic, not dodgy at all.

DO NOT GO INTO ANY STRIP JOINTS!!
We met loads of english guys who had been blatantly robbed in these places. Forced to hand over cash. Scary Russian dudes. It's a right scam they've got going there.

However I did get terribly lost leaving a club and ended up on the wrong side of the danube without realising. (long story, long night, long walk)

But a gorgeous place.8)

That was a strip joint not a bar he was in. I heard that so many times when i was over there. I was pre-warned before my visit which was ultimately titty free.

MARKB,

It may well have been such a joint my m8 was talking about!

grego,

We fly from Manchester - easyjet Friday 10:05am

This scam exists in cities all over Europe. They don't rob you - it's just that certain drinks have vastly inflated prices, or there's hidden door charges... whatever the case, when you get the bill, they make you pay it.

I heard about it before in Istanbul, if memory servers. Best to avoid dodgy strip clubs in any city you visit... and to have at least one sober person in the group when in an unfamiliar place.

Sound advice but we are often lacking in volunteers in our group!

About eight years ago in Prague we went into a girly bar and were spending the local currency like there was no tomorrow. As a result we were treated like royalty by some absolutely gorgeous girls. We stumbled out of the place into the cafe upstairs for breakfast around 9:00am, having spent no more than £20 apiece!

I imagine it is not quite the same there now cost wise but a fantastic city.

Prague was great... when I went for the first time for New Years 2001 it was still dirt cheap. A pint of Krusovice, Staropramen, Pilsner or Slatopramen cost the equivalent of 50 cents (around 28 pence?)... cheaper than bottled water. I started drinking at noon every day, usually when checking email at the Internet cafe/bar next to my hotel before moving on to the day's sightseeing and frequent beer breaks :D

I hear it's gotten more expensive now. Damn EU

We went to Prague this summer and we loved it 8)
We had serious problems to find a place to sleep with parking, as everybody said it wasn't a good idea to leave the motorbike in the street. At the end, we slept in a backpackers hostel, which was good fun and really cheap.

Budapest is perhaps my favourite city.

beautiful place.

not been into any strip clubs though.

but i have been to the cathedral, food market, synagogue and park.

There is not much choice. There is not, because we have screwed up. Not a little but a lot. No country in Europe has screwed up as much as we have. It can be explained. We have obviously lied throughout the past 18 to 24 months. It was perfectly clear that what we were saying was not true.
We are beyond the country's possibilities to such an extent that we could not conceive earlier that a joint government of the Socialists and the liberals would ever do. And in the meantime we did not actually do anything for four years. Nothing.
You cannot mention any significant government measures that we can be proud of, apart from the fact that in the end we managed to get governance out of the ****. Nothing. If we have to give an account to the country of what we have done in four years, what are we going to say? Naturally, the government's work is not constructed nicely, calmly or scrupulously. No. No. It is being prepared at a mad break-neck speed because we could not do it for a while in case it came to light, and now we have to do it so desperately that we are almost at the breaking point. And then we end up falling over because we cannot keep up the pace. This is the situation. .

I went to the Gellert Baths (a rec. from Russ I believe) and spent half the day in a variety of spas, pools and saunas. Very good for a hangover. Gorgeous place.
