Erick Morillo & Pacha - Never again!!!

I felt the need to come on here and post my review on Erick Morillo and his night ‘Subliminal Sessions’ at Pacha. We had been to see Morillo at Café Mambo, (the first weds that he had actually turned up there to play apparently, and that was because he got paid for 10 mixes!) im sorry to say that I have never met a more ignorant DJ!

He wouldn’t allow anyone to take pictures of him (unlike Roger Sanchez a few nights previous) and was rude to the crowd.
It annoys me that we had travelled especially to see him that night, and followed on to Pacha where the set he played was awful. Pacha was full of pretentious snobs. Ive never been anywhere like it, and certainly wont be returning. I know Morillo is retiring at the end of this year, but it seems to me that hes just in it for the money now, which is a shame because I used to think so much of him, and his music.

Am I alone in my experience here? :?

He's been on that tip for a while now.

His music also became dated & boring a couple of years ago IMO.

Very much the cashcow of House.

Hadn't realised he was retiring, happy days!!

To be honest, it must get on your tits to have people constantly in your face trying to get pictures while you're trying to work...

I think you'd be seriously unwise to never return to pacha on the evidence of one night... Dont you?!

Subliminal can be good, or it can be bad, it depends what time you're there, who's playing and everything. What time did u get to pacha, cos each time ive been there this season morillo hasnt even got on the decks until 5am.

Its up to you, but if you base Pacha on one bad night then the only person missing out is yourself, because their line up and nights this year are incredibly good, and no other club on the island and even the world can pull the worlds finest musical talent like Pacha does.

Id suggest you go to release yourself, def mix and yo****oshi... you might enjoy it more!

Yeah but if the people there are your fans, who make you who you are then surely you should show them some acknowledgement?
With Pacha it was just the crowd that I didn’t like. Very rude. Don’t get me wrong, the club was brilliant. We saw Morillo on the decks, Angello was on before him – saw the whole of their sets and wasn’t that impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high? … It was just too busy in there, you couldn’t even get on dance floor!

It’s a shame that that one bad experience though put me off. The crowd at Amnesia weren’t that bad either! Give me gatecrasher any day!

To be fair, it must get on your tits, but don't most "high level" Dj's expect this as part of the job? They usually only get where they are as a result of the "fans/followers/stalkers/media etc. so they must expect a few people wanting photo's (not that I've rammed a camera in the face of a DJ before...not my cup of tea, usually too busy dancing)

Oops - You just said that too...

Mightve just been having a bad day ay!!?

as for pacha, dont let one night ruin your experience.
When that place kicks off it is awesome, i know its busy, and yes, there are some pretentious people in there that think they are gods gift, but just live and let live eh! Laugh at them!

I usually chat to them and wind them up, if they think they're too good, jus laugh!

But anyway, give it another shot, maybe on one of sanchez's marathon nights every monday..

And to be honest, you saw Steve angello and erick, who is leaning alot more 'bleepy' this year, so maybe that had something to do with it perhaps?

one more thing, get to pacha laaaaaate. Ie after 3am

by that time youve lost alot of the stragglers and thats when the headliners are on aswell and you get a little more space!

hope its better next time
; )

If there is anyone decent on next year then ok i'll give it another chance. Wanted to see Picotto at privildge too. and i loved amnesia - definitly going back there! Want to catch Van Dyk, not morillo!
Hes just not having any more of my money!

I found that Morillo plays very very different in Ibiza than he does anywhere else. I've seen him I think 4 times in Canada and 2wice in Pacha and it is completely different. He plays upbeat and funky and amazing here in Canada whereas he goes very tribal and deep in Pacha, and the crowd seems to like that more. Like I said in my review, I found that a lot of Europeans like the deeper house like at Made in Italy and such like that. Too bad the night wasn't up to par. Also weird he wouldn't let pictures be taken. The last few times I've seen him at Mambo, we've chatted, hung out and had pics and others did the same too. Of course, I have a bit of a history with him as we've brought him to Canada, but as I said, others were doing the same.

Pacha is brilliant in my mind. I say go to Defected for Junior Jack on Tuesday. But yes, PVD at Amnesia beats it all!

Cant agree with you all on the paul van dyk call, but each to their own.

Canada kid... one of the reasons he's playing more techy stuff is because thats the way subliminal records are leaninig these days.

Its the same with house everywhere, the days when the filtered disco kinda thing were everywhere are gone

ibiza is subliminal's most important residency in the world id say, this is where they play all their tracks and test them out, as everything is leaning to the harder side these days then thats what you're gonna get from Erick... he can be more experimental on his own nights

When he's in canada or anywhere else for that matter then he'll be influenced to play what the 'in thing' at the moment, its the same with all DJ's...

and to be honest, its not a bad thing, it'd be awful if they re-hashed the same set and same tracks every week for an entire summer...

I know, i didnt get the whole photo thing, we saw Roger Sancher who was happy to interact with the crowd, as was Steve Angello, and axwell & ingrosso, which was why i was disapointed to find morillo like that.....

Toms,
I see where you're coming from and I agree with you in sorts. But I mean, I've seen DJs in Ibiza that I've seen elsewhere, UK and Canada, and they play virtually the same STYLE, but not set whether it be trance or house. But Morillo really took it to a new level. Really really deep and chuggy... wasn't what I was expecting. I heard some of his recent sets and all that and none of it was like how I heard him that Wednesday.

I saw him at Gatecrasher in Sheffield on new years day this year and it was one of the best nights ive ever been on, the music was absolutely fantastic. But at Pacha last week, it was the whole of his set, just seemed to be up his own arse basically. Stopping the music for these people to come out and dangle from the ceiling in fairy outfits - dodgy!

subliminal nights at pacha are totally over capacitated and it ruins your night usually, i know what you mean about morillo never turning up to mambo, ive lost count of how many times i went down specially to see him and hes not turned up, i used to be a big fan of his but steve angello and the likes wipe the floor with him these days imo

Morillo must have had bad day or sumthing. I have seen him twice this spring, at Barcelona & Madrid and in both of those places he allowed people to take photographs. Music he played was very good and mixing was OK. Also Morillo is very famous of taking his crowd into his "arms" he smiles a lot and gives an eye wink. He is a very passionate DJ and loves what he is doing. But at some point the constant travelling and staying awake till morning might take a toll so people don't be so harsh!

I'm waiting my two visits at Subliminal this summer 23rd of August and 13th of September 8)

Totally Agree. I didn't mind the music Morillo was playing and I love love love Stece Angello, but the crowd was driving me insane. The atmosphere was truly awful, there were way too many "Ibiza's great for clubbing, so I have to get a glimpse of that for one night, but dunno where to go" type, who usually end up at Pacha or WLS b/c they're the most famous clubs. I wouldn't mind them, if they weren't blocking the dancefloor NOT DANCING and being "over-cheery" iykwim...
On the other hand, you get all the pretentious snobs. Actually, I kinda like snobby people but not the kind I encountered at Subliminal ;) You have to be reaaaaaaaally gorgeous to pull that thing
Also, there were many large groups of people who tend to occupy a lot of space in a rude manner. U know the kind, they walk through the dancing crowd and suddenly, they STOP regardless of whether there's enough space or not and they form a bloody circle :x

Long story short, at around 5:30 I ended up in that little R'n'B-room near the entrance just to get away from all that rubbish in the main room. I was getting kinda annoyed by then and it usually takes a lot for me to get angry. ;)

I'm really sorry my first night at pacha turned out to be so mediocre (Music was awesome, so all these morons ultimately failed to ruin my night completely :) ), but I'll think twice about returning there ever again. If it's that rammed in early July, I don't wanna know, what the place looks like in August 8O

BTW, I kinda liked the MidsummerNight'sDancers :) The dancefloor almost coming to a full stop because of them spoiled their show for me though. Can't people dance and watch simultaneously anymore? :p
