Iconic Ibiza brand inks Meydan Beach deal

Meydan Group has announced a new partnership with legendary Ibiza chill out lounge Café del Mar which is set to launch operations in Dubai with a launch party later this month.

The world renowned establishment - recognised across the globe for its signature Balearic house music and laid-back atmosphere - will launch at Meydan Beach on December 14-15, a statement said.

The iconic brand originated in Ibiza in 1980 with the simple idea of putting chilled out music to stunning sunsets.

Yanal Abaza, Meydan's head of business development, sport & leisure said: "We are very excited to welcome the iconic Café del Mar brand to the Middle East at Meydan Beach.

"The brand is a natural fit for both our location and the target clientele for our Chillout Lounge which is one of the most glamorous beach-side locations in the Middle East."

Umesh Amarnani, founder & CEO for Utopia, the master franchisor for Café del Mar in Asia and Middle East, added: "We waited a long time to find the perfect venue in Dubai for Café del Mar.

"Café del Mar Meydan Beach is the next generation Café del Mar which is the flagship for Asia & Middle East. We promise to take Dubai on an exciting creative journey at Café del Mar Meydan Beach. We look forward to welcoming all to our new home."

Café Del Mar at Meydan Beach will be open every evening from 4pm until 1am, with a schedule of events to be announced soon.

The Café del Mar is best known around the world for its chill-out music compilations. Demand for this sunset music pushed Café del Mar into creating the Café del Mar music label.

Following the success of the first CD release in 1984, a total of 16 volumes of the main compilation series have since been published selling a total of about 9 million albums worldwide. Viva Entertainment has exclusive distribution rights of music CDs in the Middle East.

...didn't think cafe del mar ibiza would be happy about this...this is the problem when you sell rights left right and centre....

Meydan Beach on Thursday said it is still bringing the Cafe del Mar brand to Dubai, refuting a twitter account that denied the opening planned for this weekend.

The Dubai beach club announced plans, as reported in Gulf News tabloid! this week, to launch the Ibiza club brand at its JBR The Walk Chill Out Lounge on Friday.

However, on Wednesday, Cafe del Mar's official twitter feed posted: “A non-authorized Café Del Mar is apparently going to open Friday 14th Dec at Meydan Beach in Dubai. It has nothing to do with us...”

Meydan Beach issued the following statement on Thursday in response. “Meydan Beach, through its entertainment partner Viva Entertainment FZE, has contracted with the United Arab Emirates registered owner of the Café Del Mar brand to provide the full Café Del Mar experience at the Chill Out Lounge at Meydan Beach. Café Del Mar at Meydan Beach is set to be one of Dubai's premier Chill Out Lounge experiences and we very much look forward to the official opening on December 14th and 15th.”

FROM CDM:

[h=5]We would like to inform that Café del Mar Ibiza has nothing to do with the “Café del Mar Dubai” advertised in Dubai press. It is misleadingly advertised that “Ibiza superbrand Café del Mar is arriving to Dubai”.

It is also falsely advertised that Bruce Hill, who is playing in the opening, is a resident DJ of Café del Mar Ibiza. Bruce Hill has nothing to do with Café del Mar Ibiza, we have never heard of him.

CAFÉ DEL MAR of Ibiza never authorized nor supported such operations. Dubai based company called Utopia, defining itself “Master franchisor for Café del mar in ASIA”, claims to have given the authorization to Meydan, but no valid agreement exists between the Café del Mar organization and Utopia.

We want to inform that these actions are out of any kind of control, supervision and musical direction of Café del Mar Ibiza and they have never been sanctioned by Café del Mar Ibiza.[/h]

Note, they have even messed about with the logo - shocking stuff

They have said:

Viva Entertainment spokesperson confirms “the legal registered owner of the Café del Mar trademark in UAE is one of the original founders Ramon Guirel Bruto, with whom Viva Entertainment FZE have signed the exclusive rights for the Café del Mar brand for 20 years. As per UAE law we have signed with the registered owner of the brand, and are therefore confident that we have every legal right to operate the brand. Our commitment is to deliver the blissful Cafe del Mar experience, remaining true to all its original brand values.

and...(reg. logo & dj´s)
The slight alternation of the logo was done as we all felt that the logo looked like MOAR as opposed to MAR - we have the brand owner's permission to do so.

Secondly we have the right to appoint resident DJs at Cafe del Mar as we see appropriate. The artists have done tests which we have put in place which qualifies them as Cafe del Mar residents and they will be exclusive for Café del Mar Dubai only!
