Here is great old mix from Jose padilla , I remember listening to padilla on many occasion in the early 90s at del mar and his sets used to take you on a journey playing opera to vangellis to mad porno music with mad sounds mixed in and im glad im one of the ones who got the chance to hear his sundown sessions, we used to buy tapes off him and he would open his wooden box and you used to get to choose what one you wanted for about 2 mill pasatas ...it seems a million miles away from what it is like now down on the commercial sun set strip. im knocking the sunset strip as its still a good experience but im saying back when there was only del mar down there it was special..... i will shut up now.

Cafe Del Mar was Ibiza for me for many a year. I used to religiously go the sunset each night (sometimes on my own) with two large San Miguel and sit and watch the sunset and listen to the fantastic tunes.

This year I walked past and they were playing a CD and you could hardly hear the music. After the sunset everyone left.

Cafe Del Mar is dying a slow death.

I would love to get my hands on it and bring it back to life, my ideas (as discussed with the Mrs this year!)

Open during the day
DJs playing at all time
Do food
Get some beds / loungers
Sort out the sound system

So true. I have never been into the sunset thing anyway but had been several times in 1990. It was so much different back then. I seem to remember there being very few buildings in the area.
There would be a few hippies, Moroccans and Spanish playing checkers, drinking coffee or San Miguels and having a discreet spliff. There was also some very dodgy looking Brit ravers selling drugs. The place certainly wasnt packed and there was no seating down the side of the building.
There might have been a few "ooh and "ah" as the sun went down but nothing like the response that there is these days and there wasn't the mass exodus after the sunset. Well there wasn't a mass of people there anyway.
I didn't go again until 18 years later. As I said, I'm not really into the sunset thing but Missus D had never been so I took her to show her the famous cafe and the kind of thing we used to do. It was so very different though so I told her this really wasn't the kind of thing I used to do be but the architecture of the cafe was pretty much the same.
A couple of Italian girls stood in front of a hedge (I think?) and asked me to take a pic of them with their camera. Being the nice guy that I am, I obliged. I made sure to get their heads and feet neatly into the frame and clicked the button. A little while later I noticed other people getting their pic taken in the same spot. It was then that I realized there was a large sign slightly above their heads that said "Cafe del Mar". The same sign that I had NOT got into the pic for the two Italian girls. durr.

Mind you if I owned the place I would rather it was busy like it is now than the how it was when it was more of a cool scene.

I think Cafe Del Mar has had financial difficulties for the past number of years.....thats why nothing is being done with it.

That is very sad indeed.

Very surprising then that they cant get an investor or a buyer who wants to put it back on the map. I think Mambos has shown its true colours this year with its dick head door staff and heavy handed approach to the public of the strip. It must be a goldmind if in the right hands, wonder how much it would cost? :D

Hasn't CDM just extended with a new bar next door?

I walked past at 22.30 every were was packed but CDM was empty.

+

The last time I went there it was so expencive, Golden Budah for me.

what, apart from the huge extension they just made!!!

the reason for CDM's troubles are well known. they aren't financial

I love the CDM compilations (okay not ALL but most). I order them off of Amazon yearly and it sucks to hear what's happening with the bar itself. Their pre parties with the likes of Markus Schultz and Marco Carola seem successful but they should have a DJ, even just a local resident, spinning a sundown set. I'm breaking my Ibiza virginity this year and my hotel is pretty close to it so I hope to spend my hangovers there
