Berlin advice needed

I'm flying from NYC to Berlin to Ibiza, but I have ond day to spend in Berlin. Does anyone have any suggestions for things to see, where to stay, what to do? I know it's only one day but I've never been to Germany before so I would like to do as much as I can.
I was thinking of staying at the Swissotel Berlin, which is on the Kurfürstendamm. Apparently it's a shopping district??

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi there. I went to Berlin for a couple of days in November and had a grand old time. I stayed near Potsdamer Platz where there's some decently inexpensive hotels (several from the Accor group in a row) and it was a 15-20 minute walk to the Brandenberg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, etc. There's a lot of tourist stuff around that area as well.

Here's another post on the subject:

Riding on the me-tro-oh-oh!

Oh, by the way, great metro system in Berlin. You buy a ticket that lasts 2 hours and you can hop on and off whenever. And it works all night on weekends :D

i went to berlin a couple of years ago n went to a club called TRESOR n it was pretty bangin.
Have fun over ther mate ;)

They have a great system of buses that tour round a continuous loop of the city's tourist spots. You buy a ticket and get a map and it's a hop on hop off system with a bus every 15 minutes. The buses are all fitted with headphones on the back of every seat with a switch for around 7 or 8 languages and provides a running commentry as you're travelling round. Fantastic setup. Just hop off the bus at any of the stops look around then get back to the same special bus stop and jump onto the next bus to move onto somewhere else. You can easily spend all day doing this seeing the sites. ;)

Warning! The Jewish museum is VERY spooky and disturbing but a 'must see'. 8O

Thanks, that sounds like a great way to see the city if I only have a day.
Why is the Jewish museum spooky?

Probably eerie is a better word. But you must go in and experience it yourself. The security is as tight as it is at the airports with metal detectors etc. Once inside you have to leave your coat/jacket in the large cloakroom. All part of the phsycology to make you feel cold and vunerable. The architectual design is very clever and deliberately throws you off balance, but, I don't want to spoil it for you, you must experience it yourself.
