OK ive heard 2 storys in the last week, where people have had money stolen from there bank, The one below is from this forum, and i personnally know someone who had £2000 pounds taken from his machine

PS: one bad thing, someone copy my bank card (not the visa the real bank card with maestro...) in a cash machine, I don't know how because I never loose or abandon my card but it was copied (my bank and the police told me that it happens very often) and when I go home I saw that they stole me 900€ and now my bank is making an enquiry. I just told you that so you know it can happen...

Sounds very bad to me, I for one wont be taking my bank card, and i wudnt reccommend any one doing so

Anyone else heard any stories of this happening

:(

It happens here quite frequently. I personally would rather take less cash and my card for back up, as the card is insured, cash obviously isn't. Although you initially lose the cash out of your account, your bank will reimburse you later as you haven't signed any thing.

this kind of fraud - be it copying the data from an original card, or actually stealing the card - is no more prevalent in ibiza than in any of your home towns.

it happens so be careful.

this advice is as good in ibiza as other seaside towns such as tamworth!

It can happen not just in Ibiza. Last June there was a sting operation by the police round here. Posters now up saying look out for dodgy items on the wall. I heard some of them now use bins to hide the devices.

sometimes they attach a card reader to the slot on the ATM so when you insert your card it reads the details. This happened to one of my mates in London, they also had a little camera on the machine so that they could find out the PIN.
The bank refunded all the money, no one refunds lost cash. The only problem could be that you cant get any money while it is sorted out. I will still take some euros and get the rest out of an ATM but will have a look at the machine b4 using it to see if it has been tampered with. :spank:

Id Prefer to Take Mostly Travler Cheques

According to Mate who has 2000 stolen, Its gona take him quite a while to get the 2 grand back, at least a couple of months

the key is to show some vigilance when at the atm, check it out, check the slot for the card looks intact and that no parts pull away and that there arent any additions that could hold a camera.

i also make sure i go to the cash point with someone and that they face the other way so no-one is typing my pin into their phone.

it may seem like a lot of hassle but when on holiday there is usually a lot of money at stake and its usually taken a long and hard time to get it. loosing it could ruin what could have been a perfect holiday.

This has happened to me loads of times in Ibiza.

Upon my return to England, I looked at my bank statement, and absolutely sh1tloads has been taken out of my account, apparently using a card identical to mine, with the right pin etc, and I can not remember a thing about it.

Most strange?!

I always use plastic and have done for years. If you get the right cards there isn't any commission/charges to pay, some banks charge 4% on top for handling!

I've never had any problems and found ibiza to be ahead of other places with security i.e. needing id to use your card in shops.

Whilst out there this year they have now introduced the pin colde machines in some shops BUT they all required me to tell them the pin so as they could type it in as the machine was the other side of the til and wouldn't reach over. This meant that the shop keeper and a line of customers all now know my pin. The shops were Xico in San Jose and Spar in Cala Vadella + numerous other ones.

Obvious advice really, I think people just tend to let their guard down more on holiday. I took my card and had no problems, but if you think you wont be able to keep it secure enough then either leave it in a safe in your hotel or leave it at home.

Tamworth? Its nowhere near the sea!! :?

i always take my card, never take cash over with me.

Have done for many years. Just have to keep a watchful eye, just like you do at home. Its no different.

I know a lot about credit card fraud, it happens everywhere, just make sensible precautions like hold your wallet over the numbers when putting your number in, if anyone needs any further advice, let me know as I used to work in a fraud department in a bank

I have a claim going through Barclays at the moment for £281.00 sterling. 400euros was withdrawn one day when a) The cash machines I used had a maximum limit of 300euros, b) I didn't use a cash machine on said day c) does not tally with my withdrawal records.

This could actually be down to computer error rather than fraud because that was all that was taken. This in mind I will still be taking my card when I go back in September.
