[ 10 ways Ibiza will change in 2017 ]
The media love a pigeon hole, don’t they? It certainly helps them categorise. Tech house is such a catch all genre. Now it’s being seen as the entry point for some. For others it’s seen as bland monotonous rubbish. For others it’s cutting edge. Reality is it’s not all the same but it is projected as such as it suits a narrative.
I don’t see edm being in decline. Far from it. Hi wasn’t here last year and this year it landed and provides nights full of the stuff while the other clubs continue to serve up the edm they have in recent times. The dj mag poll confirms the ongoing popularity of that particular genre. Vegas continues to be rammed with the stuff. How anyone can say it’s in decline is beyond me.
One can live in hope.I don’t see edm being in decline.
I am only basing edm knowledge on what I see in Ibiza, Vegas and dj mag polls. I don’t follow the genre. It’s not a big scene in the uk. It always makes me laugh that USA is tarnished with the edm brush as being the dance sound of choice. Amongst many it probably is but many fail to see what you see and completely fail to recognise where house and techno originated. The USA scene has always been healthy in my adult lifetime and continues to grow from what I can see.Your first point i think is a really good point. DJ's across the board can be considered "tech house". I've seen Dixon play real melodic sets I guess you would consider tech house and then seen sets where he plays a full onslaught of nearly pure techno so not all the same but he'll get labeled tech house because he's not purely house and not purely techno. Some of it is really bad and boring (A lot of Paradise style in my humble opinion) and some is really good (not going to list my DJ preferences) but the point really is tech house is in fact a catch all these days and really doesn't mean anything.
Your second point I do disagree with mostly. Perhaps being in a larger market like New York which is more progressive makes me biased but A LOT of the "EDM" nights are just gone along with the large events as there just isn't the same interest as there was maybe 5 years ago. Regarding the DJ Mag polls and Vegas in general I think what you have is a known names scenario. Especially in Vegas where you have tourists from stretches of America who have no exposure to any "underground" music and dozens of people from California who just come to party for the weekend and aren't super concerned with the music on offer. I've been to Vegas probably around 20 times over the last 10 years, when i first started going there was next to NO "EDM" on offer at all (it was all hip hop/radio music) which has now drastically changed. I just think in the case of Vegas people dont really care whats played, they just want to party. If every club started booking Jamie Jones, Hot Since 82, Marco Carola, etc, etc, you wouldn't see people stop going to clubs on a fri/sat because of the music.
Agree with your first paragraph. That sound is very much popular in the uk. Especially amongst young people and has been for years. I’m surprised there isn’t more of it in Ibiza.I agree with most. As much as cannot stand rap, grime, and most garage of today, not the past. I can see alot of the younger crowd coming over to see those artists of that genre and being the pinnacle of their trip.
Which is fine people pay there money to see who they want its just a shame that they arn't being brought upon more underground genres and trying something different. Thats what made Ibiza exciting for me, discovering new things!
On a personal note would love more desert sounds and would definatley consider a daytime party if that came about , really enjoyed the sets in the woomoon main room at amnesia closing. A lee burridge all day i dream party at cova santa (if they are still open?) Or km5 would go down a treat for me![]()
people who use the word 'eclectic' to describe music they don't understand
all of them can go f**k themselves
Its not my personal favourite music but it is nice as a treat and worked well at bpm earlier in the year. I agree about the tech house comment, calling it tech house when it isnt, it just seems easier for them to class it all as one genre.Agree with your first paragraph. That sound is very much popular in the uk. Especially amongst young people and has been for years. I’m surprised there isn’t Mir of it in Ibiza.
What mixmag describe as tech house as an entry point is souped up house with big breakdowns that has been the defected, mos, hed kandi sound of Ibiza for the uk market for two decades. Yet it’s apparently now tech house. It’s certainly not what I recognise tech house to be. A little like when beatport decided edm was progressive house. It just suits the pigeon holing narrative the media and sales force wish to peddle.
Can’t agree with you re desert sounds ......argh! Each to their own though.
I have to laugh that daytime clubbing is almost being projected as a new thing in terms of popularity. It’s as if the 90s didn’t happen.
I said thatI love deep funky tech house with hip hop flava's...I just call it HOUSE...
