Since it was announced that the legends that are Madness were coming back to Ibiza Rocks with their heavy heavy monster sound, many people had that unmissable date in their agenda and we knew that there would be, by far, more locals than any other week this season. As always happens when they bring classic bands, the resident djs' music selection was in line with this week's artists so it was mostly Reggae, Ska and similar sounds.
Hollie Cook is the daughter of Sex Pistols' drummer Paul Cook and Culture Club's backing singer Jeni Cook (Boy George is actually her godfather) so music was in her genes. No sign of her dad, who was spotted at DC10 last week, but her proud mom was among the crowd like one of us taking videos with her phone.
The singer based the show on her two studio albums, the self-titled debut (2011) and especially on the new Twice (2014). We were dazzled by her sweet voice on songs like "Cry" or the brilliant "Looking For Real Love". The Londoner's laid-back Pop/Dub/Reggae, or tropical Pop as she likes to describe it, was perfect to get us in the mood for Madness!
To those that decided to arrive late just in time to see the headliner and missed her show, shame on you. After all these years attending to Ibiza Rocks I'm happy to say that very often I enjoyed the opening bands more than the big names... not the case of this week but still, it's disappointing that so many people don't support the smaller bands and Hollie Cook definitely deserved a bigger crowd. [RANT OVER]
We remember the list of iconic names that graced the Ibiza Rocks Hotel stage in the last years and we realize how lucky we are to have on the island a promoter with big enough balls to book such names: Ian Brown, The Prodigy, The Specials, Madness, Happy Mondays, New Order and Chic... all of them still fresh in our memories. This year saw the return of Ska legends Madness and, of course, the buzz was immense. Since the last time we saw them in 2011 they have released their tenth studio album Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da (2012) and the bassist Mark Bedford has rejoined the band, although for some reason it wasn't him who played yesterday.
Their concert included all the expected hits but also more recent material like "NW5" or "My Girl 2". The opener "Night Boat To Cairo", "Embarrassment", "My Girl", "House Of Fun", "Baggy Trousers" and "Our House" were some of the many classics we heard from the band's catalog along with the usual covers they made famous, like "It Must Be Love", the first encore "One Step Beyond" (with the audience singing the melody long before it even started!) or the closing number "Madness". Surprise of the evening came with the karaoke version of Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right" sang by possibly the best guitarist in the band (Suggs dixit!), Chris Foreman. Confusingly enough, Madness member and Ibiza resident Chas Smash wasn't there with the rest of the band so, needless to say, the immortal spoken intro of "One Step Beyond" wasn't quite the same... it was pretty bloody amazing anyway!
With the lights on and Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" blasting through the sound system, we left the hotel with a big satisfied smile on our faces after 75 minutes of Ska-fuelled frenzy...
