Ibiza Rocks celebrated their 7th birthday with the highly anticipated return of Kasabian to the white isle... not only the tickets were sold out but it was also probably their busiest night ever!
First though we had the hotly tipped newcomers TOY, a London 5 piece (with a spanish female member in it!) that mixes Sonic Youth-esque noise rock elements, synth-driven krautrock and psychedelia creating a dense and hypnotic wall of sound with Lou Reed-like vocals. Confused? This is what they say about their intentions:"we want it to feel like you're driving fast down a motorway or going on a fast train through the countryside or flying on a plane"... erm, okay then!
With the venue busy right from the beginning, they played their two singles (the eight-minute-long "Left myself behind" and the catchy "Motoring"), stuff from their self-titled debut album that will be out in september like the closing "Kopter" and even a non-album track like "Bright white shimmering sun"... pure awesomeness!
Difficult to be impressed by anything after such a display of power but the Kasabian boys were back in town. Before them, famous radio personality Zane Lowe continued warming up an already eager crowd while the hotel was getting pretty full!
Kasabian first played at Bar M in 2006 (two dates) and returned in 2007 (another two dates) but they're a much bigger band nowadays. This time they were presenting their fourth album Velociraptor!, thanks to which they were named Best British Band at this year's NME Awards!
During the hour and a half they were on stage we heard songs selected from all their albums, with old and new received with the same enthusiasm by the audience, provoking a frenzy of crowd-surfing and the craziest mosh pits I've seen at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. The band left the stage after everyone sang happy birthday to their keyboard player but they came back shortly after for an encore of another three songs, finishing with "Fire" (where they got everyone to kneel down and jump in unison) which was followed by an acapella version of The Beatles' "She loves you"... what an incredible night!
The birthday bash continued at Ibiza Rocks Bar (with Zane Lowe), Es Paradis (with Colin Peters -who was celebrating his anniversary too!-, Nicola Bear and Tom Grainger) and the jam-packed Ibiza Rocks House...
