IBIZA ROCKS 5TH BIRTHDAY with The Prodigy + Rob Da Bank + South Central (July 20th)

After last week's maximum fun with Maxïmo Park, the big one... the event nobody wanted to miss... yep, the 5th birthday of Ibiza Rocks with The Prodigy. Second sold out of the season (Dizzee Rascal next week will be the third one) with the place rammed from the beginning!

South Central opened and, like last year, the set of the hooded duo was absolutely killer. The funniest moment of the evening arrived during their set when a little kid in the VIP (the raving baby as the ressie Doorly called him later) started jumping and waving his arms like the people downstairs. He had the entire audience cheering at him for a long while... a totally cool kid (I suppose this answers to people asking if children are allowed or if there's an age restriction)!

BBC Radio 1's Rob Da Bank was next... I love Roberto Del Banko and his eclectic sets so what can I say? I enjoyed every second of the music he played!

And then the chaos with The Prodigy. Their second time playing on the island (first one was back in 1992) was for many, me included, one of the best nights of their lives. "Experience" and "Music for the jilted generation" had a big impact on me, at a time the most electronic stuff my ears could accept was Skinny Puppy/Front Line Assembly/KMFDM/Ministry/Nine Inch Nails/Scorn and other industrial bands like that, so having the chance to see them live was a dream come true. Apart from the expected classics from their first three albums, during their 80 minute long concert they played eight songs from their last album "Invaders must die" but none from the previous one "Always outnumbered, never outgunned" (not even "Spitfire"). Quite simply one of the best concerts I've ever been to!

On a curious note, the guys from Detroit Social Club loved Ibiza so much some of them had to come back one month after their support gig for Ian Brown to party for a few days. At the end of the night I had a chat with the singer and he assured me he'll be visiting the island often from now on... good man. Anyway, feliz cumpleaños Ibiza Rocks!

Favourite moment of the night: "Smack my bitch up", during which people was asked to get down on the floor and then jump back up again... something Slipknot (a band Liam Howlett loves) has been doing for donkeys and that was really cool to experience!

Do you have a hi res version of that pic of the baby?

Im the one in yellow next to him filming. If you do could you pm me and I will send over my email.

Oh my, McRackin. We grew up on some of the same music
NIN, Skinny Puppy and Ministry were among my favorites (along with Nitzer Ebb).

I've seen Prodigy live twice and it's always a great show but I imagine the Ibiza Rocks venue would really add to the experience.

Was easily the best concert ever been to. I will post some pics once they have been uploaded but here is "Rave Baby" from a balcony view stood next to the little legend.

My daughter got a similiar reception (not as hectic as that like) last year whiel dancing at Paco Fernandez @ Blu marlin.

Thats one of the things i love about Spain/Ibiza, its so child friendly (dont get me wrong theres a time and a place)

I've seen Prodigy live twice and it's always a great show but I imagine the Ibiza Rocks venue would really add to the experience.

I've seen them twice also, and they were incredible. But the thing that I remember the most was the Bass  It made your shirt move, and you just had to bounce with the crowd or you'd get trampled

Was the bass good @ Ibiza rocks ???

the prodigy set list:

1 world's on fire
2 breathe
3 omen
4 colours
5 poison
6 thunder
7 warrior's dance
8 firestarter
9 run with the wolves
10 voodoo people
11 invaders must die
12 diesel power
13 smack my bitch up

14 take me to the hospital
15 everybody in the place
16 out of space
17 their law

Pretty much what it was when I saw them, never known anything like it when they first kicked off... they didnt have a break between the first two so it was pretty much 10 minutes of insanity

Their Law is a fantastic way to end the set

IR ressie Doorly in his weekly blog post said:
The best moment of the gig for me came from the VIP balcony - there was a young boy (maybe 3 or 4 years old) jumping up and down doing dance moves (hands in the air, clapping, pumping fists etc) and once the crowd noticed him they completely turned their attention away from the stage and started to copy his moves, for a good 10 minutes he was completely directing the entire 3000 crowd!! We dubbed him ‘Rave Baby' and he got the biggest cheer of the night when I hollered about him on the mic!

"I hate Pete Tong and house music and Ibiza should be bombed"

Liam Howlett in interview in the 90s

I won't knock him though. I still have a very soft spot for the Jilted album. One of my great regrets was never seeing The Prodigy live. They did a PA at hammersmith palais in 92 which some mates went to but I wasn't confident I looked old enough to get in! The only soldiers of rave to ever properly 'cross over' - although in the end they sailed way too far into kerrang territory to sustain my interest.
