Spandau Ballet's eagerly-awaited gig was cancelled due to the drummer being ill so Ibiza Rocks had to find a last-minute replacement for this week's show... Fatboy Slim, long-time friend of the Rocks family since the Manumission days, stepped in to save the day.
Active since the late-70s, the bio of Rusty Egan (Peter Anselm Egan) is quite fascinating: drummer of New Wave band Rich Kids (founded by former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock and fronted by future Thin Lizzy and Ultravox member Midge Ure) and New Romantic band Visage, co-founder and dj at the London clubs Blitz (where he introduced synth Pop to the British club scene) and Camden Palace, producer, etc.
He's no stranger to Ibiza as he dj'd in the past at different venues across the island and even had weekly residencies at the disappeared Aura and at Nassau (along with Spandau Ballet's saxophonist Steve Norman).
Rusty Egan's set of Blitz-era songs went down a threat and was perfect before Norman Cook rolled on stage. He also dj'd later at the afterparty at Pikes and will do it again today at the Groucho party.
Ibiza Rocks ressie Patrick Nazemi did a great one-hour set between the two big names on the bill, this time on the main stage for the first time.
The legend that is Fatboy Slim made his Ibiza Rocks debut in 2011 but his last appearance at the hotel was last summer at W.A.R! with his Eat Sleep Rave Repeat show (one of the busiests events of the season at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, if not the busiest).
From the beginning with "Star 69" to the end with "Praise You", it was a big rave with some of his many anthems like "Eat Sleep Rave Repeat", "The Rockafeller Skank" or "Right Here, Right Now" mixed with some of his fave tunes, from "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles to "Jack" by Breach. As promised, there was some Spandau thrown in the mix specially for the occasion. The Rocks crowd loves a good sing-a-long and to see everybody singing "True" was the best way to pay homage to one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Great show and amazing atmosphere... thankfully we got something really good out of something unfortunate!
As you might remember, the barefoot dj is playing again at Ibiza Rocks on september 2nd with his new Smile High Club show.
Hopefully Spandau Ballet will make it next year. Steve Norman was actually in the VIP with various island mates (Gary and Martin Kemp were still here but apparently they didn't turn up)...
Sigma are back next week... tickets available through Spotlight as usual.
